Sulfate is an important anion as sulfonation is essential in modulation of several compounds, such as exogens, polysaccharide chains of proteoglycans, cholesterol or cholesterol derivatives and tyrosine residues of several proteins. Sulfonation requires the presence of both the sulfate donor 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS) and a sulfotransferase. Genetic disorders affecting sulfonation, associated with skeletal abnormalities, impaired neurological development and endocrinopathies, demonstrate the importance of sulfate. Yet sulfate is not measured in clinical practice. This review addresses sulfate metabolism and consequences of sulfonation defects, how to measure sulfate and why we should measure sulfate more often.

Background: Critical size bone defects represent a clinical challenge, associated with considerable morbidity, and frequently trigger the requirement of secondary procedure. To fill osseous gaps, multiple steps are required, such as proliferation and differentiation on the cellular level and the building of extracellular matrix. In addition, the osteogenic potential of cell-derived extracellular matrices (CD-ECM) is known to enhance bone healing.

Anode-free sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs), which eliminate the need for a lithium metal anode during fabrication, offer superior energy density, enhanced safety, and simplified manufacturing. Their performance is largely influenced by the interfacial properties of the current collectors. Although previous studies have investigated the degradation of sulfide electrolytes on commonly used copper (Cu) and stainless steel (SS) current collectors, the impact of spontaneously formed surface oxides, such as copper oxide (CuO/CuO) and chromium oxide (CrO), on interfacial stability remains underexplored.

The rheological behavior of ulvan/kappa-carrageenan, ulvan/funoran and ulvan/gelatin mixtures is investigated using dynamic rheology to provide insights into the phase aggregation behavior of each ulvan-based network. The average molecular weight of extracted ulvan was between 436 and 573 kDa, and contained varying amounts of sulfate (10.3-28.

Despite the overall conservation of ribosomes across all domains of life, differences in their 3D architecture, rRNA sequences, ribosomal protein composition, and translation factor requirements reflect lineage-specific adaptations to environmental niches. In the domain Archaea, structural studies have primarily focused on non-methanogenic thermophiles and halophiles, leaving it unclear whether these represent the broader archaeal domain. Here, we report the cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of the ribosome from Methanosarcina acetivorans, a previously unreported high-resolution structure from a model mesophilic methanogenic archaeon.
