Article Abstract

We report an experimental and theoretical study of the morphology of desiccation cracks formed in deposits of hematite ellipsoids dried in an externally applied alternating current (ac) electric field. A series of transitions in the crack morphology is observed by modulating the frequency and the strength of the applied field. We also found a clear transition in the morphology of cracks as a function of the aspect ratio of the ellipsoid. We show that these transitions in the crack morphology can be explained by a linear stability analysis of the equation describing the effective dynamics of an ellipsoid placed in an externally applied ac electric field.

This research explores the dynamical properties and solutions of actin filaments, which serve as electrical conduits for ion transport along their lengths. Utilizing the Lie symmetry approach, we identify symmetry reductions that simplify the governing equation by lowering its dimensionality. This process leads to the formulation of a second-order differential equation, which, upon applying a Galilean transformation, is further converted into a system of first-order differential equations.

A new whole-body exposure facility for a randomized, double-blind, cross-over provocation study investigating possible effects of 50 Hz magnetic field exposure on sleep and markers of Alzheimer's disease has been developed and dosimetrically analyzed. The exposure facility was custom-tailored for the sleep laboratory where the study was carried out and enables magnetic flux densities of up to 30 μT with a maximum field inhomogeneity of less than ± 20%. Exposure is applied fully software-controlled and in a blinded and randomized manner.

Short-Time Relaxation and Anomalous Diffusion in Dynamic Covalent Networks.

Introducing dynamic covalent chemistries into polymer networks allows access to complex linear viscoelasticity, owing to the reversible nature of the dynamic bonds. While this macroscopic mechanical behavior is influenced by the dynamic exchange of these chemistries, connecting the microscopic dynamics to the bulk properties is hindered by the time scale conventional techniques can observe. Here, light scattering passive microrheology is applied to probe short-time dynamics of dynamic covalent networks that consist of telechelic benzalcyanoacetate (BCA) Michael acceptors and thiol-functionalized cross-linkers.
