Article Abstract

Fixation of CO into dihydroisobenzofuran derivatives has enormous applications in both production of natural products and antidepressant drugs, and reducing the green-house effect. However, the relatively complicated multi-step processes limit the further expansion of such a valuable CO conversion strategy. Herein, we hierarchically modify the surface of Cu nanoparticles (NPs) with Ag NPs and the robust metal-organic framework (MOF), ZIF-8, and report the presence of the Cu-Ag yolk-shell nanoalloy based heterogeneous catalysts, Cu@Ag and Cu@Ag@ZIF-8. The latter exhibits a crystalline "raisin bread" structure and specific synergic activity for catalyzing the tandem reactions of intra-molecular H-transfer, C-C and C-O coupling, cyclization, and carboxylation from CO, leading to the first non-homogeneous preparation of dihydroisobenzofuran derivatives in high yield, selectivity, and recyclability under mild conditions. Theoretical calculations elucidate the tandem reaction pathway synergically catalyzed by Cu@Ag@ZIF-8, which offers insights for designing multiphase catalysts towards both organic synthesis and CO fixation through tandem processes in one pot.

The origin and phylogenetic distribution of symbiotic associations between nodulating angiosperms and nitrogen-fixing bacteria have long intrigued biologists. Recent comparative evolutionary analyses have yielded alternative hypotheses: a multistep pathway of independent gains and losses of root nodule symbiosis vs. a single gain followed by numerous losses.

Three-dimensional (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent promising photocatalytic platforms with accessible active sites, yet their development faces challenges in terms of structural diversity and synthetic complexity. Herein, a robust 3D metalloporphyrin COF with topology and 2-fold interpenetration is achieved by using high-connectivity metalloporphyrin, and different metal centers within the porphyrin units of 3D COFs lead to intriguing structural variations. Particularly, the 3D cobalt-porphyrin-based COF achieves efficient photocatalytic CO-to-CO conversion with a rate of 21 251.

The valorization of CO to chemicals beyond C products is receiving significant interest; however, the direct electrosynthesis of C molecules (n > 4) remains a challenge. Here, we present a two-step abiotic-biotic system for upgrading CO into the biopolymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate). In the electrolysis system, CO is converted into C oxygenates using a Cu-Ag tandem electrocatalyst.

Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBisCO) is the primary regulator of carbon fixation in the plant kingdom. Although the large subunit (RBCL) is the site of catalysis, RuBisCO efficiency is also influenced by the sequence divergence of the small subunit (RBCS). This project compared the RBCS gene family in C3 and C4 grasses to identify genetic targets for improved crop photosynthesis.
