Melamine is a chemical compound that is added to dairy products to increase the apparent protein content for higher profit margins. However, extended consumption of melamine can cause health risks. The SERS technique has proven to be an important tool for detecting small compounds, such as melamine. Here, a paper-based flexible nanoparticles (NPs)-hybrid SERS substrate was designed by drop-casting pegylated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the filter papers. In SERS characterization, this substrate exhibited an enhancement factor of 10 and a limit of detection (LOD) as low as 10 M for Rhodamine 6G dye. Furthermore, we successfully utilized these substrates to detect the melamine spiked milk sample with an LOD as low as 0.01 ppm. This hybrid SERS substrate offers a low-cost, biocompatible, and easy-to-use fabrication for large-scale production, which may be widely used in food safety applications.

The development of cellulose-based electromagnetic shielding materials is critical for the advancement of sustainable, lightweight, and flexible electronic devices. Most high-performance composites rely on nanocellulose, which is expensive and energy-intensive to produce. In this work, we employ chemically modified conventional eucalyptus pulp fibers (non-nano) to fabricate Janus-structured cellulose/MXene composite papers.

ObjectivesTo determine the feasibility and acceptability of home-based pulmonary rehabilitation (HBPR) for individuals with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).MethodsIn this single-arm feasibility trial, individuals with IPF were recruited from Delhi, India, to a 6-weeks HBPR programme using a paper-based manual. Primary outcomes were feasibility (classified by ≥60% of eligible patients recruited and ≥70% of recruited patients completing the follow-up assessment) and intervention acceptability (semi-structured interviews).

Excessive pesticide residues have posed a severe risk to human health and ecological environment, making stringent testing of them a crucial step in food safety supervision. Herein, a flexible paper-based SERS platform composed of AgNPs and MoS nanoflowers was developed for the rapid and ultra-sensitive detection of thiram in juice. Among it, the hydrophobic MoS-modified paper was first fabricated, followed by co-depositing small-sized AgNPs and thiram molecules onto its surface for SERS analysis.

This review explores the evolving landscape of sustainable food packaging, focusing on biopolymer and nanomaterial-based coatings for paper substrates. As global initiatives prioritize circular economy strategies, the demand for biodegradable and recyclable alternatives to single-use, petroleum-based polymers has intensified. Paper packaging emerges as a promising candidate, despite inherent barrier performance limitations.

We designed and fabricated a highly deformable and high-performance optical paper-based perovskite (CHNHPbBr) terahertz modulator. Broadband modulation of the terahertz transmission and reflection in the device reached 30% and 50%, respectively, which represents superior modulation performance to that of quartz-based polycrystalline film and quartz-based CHNHPbBr polycrystalline samples. Bending measurements revealed the paper-based device's strong bending stability.
