Article Abstract

Bacterial keratitis is an infection of the cornea. This kind of infection can progress quickly and if left untreated, it can eventually cause complete blindness. While and are most commonly responsible for this type of infection in the United States, spp. is rarely encountered. Here we describe an interesting case of keratitis in a 31-year-old male patient having an extended wear of contact lenses. The patient presented at the emergency department with irritation, foreign body sensation, redness, and pain of his left eye. was isolated from a corneal scraping specimen, and determined by sequencing a region of 16S rRNA gene. The patient had antimicrobial therapy with good improvement. We highlight the important role of in causing keratitis, and its accurate and timely diagnosis is needed to avoid poor visual outcomes.

Nanomaterials are widely used. The gases emitted from industrial manufacturing contain nanoparticles, which increases the chance of nanomaterials coming into contact with the eyes. Nanomaterials may cause damage to the eyeball wall and eye contents, manifested as keratitis, neovascularization of the iris, vitreous inflammation, retinitis, etc.

Background: There are no universally established guidelines for when pediatric EH warrants hospitalization or intravenous (IV) acyclovir over oral therapy. To address this lack of consensus, this study aimed to describe outcomes of outpatient oral acyclovir treatment in pediatric EH cases, including rates of disease exacerbation, hospitalizations, and complications.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort review of pediatric patients under age 7 diagnosed with EH who presented to the pediatric emergency department (ED) between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2022.

The high incidence and prevalence of herpes infections pose a significant health burden worldwide. Herpes simplex virus infections are the cause of herpes labialis, genital herpes or herpes keratitis and in rare cases life-threatening herpes encephalitis, meningitis or disseminated disease. After primary infection herpes simplex viruses (HSVes) establish latency in the trigeminal and sacral ganglia and at least 30% of patients experience clinically manifestant recurrences for life.

Purpose: To study clinical characteristics and outcomes of penetrating keratoplasty (PK) and deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) wound dehiscence.

Methods: This retrospective case series assessed PK and DALK recipients with wound dehiscence at a single institution. We evaluated relationships between dehiscence etiologies, transplant indications, ocular/systemic comorbidities, keratoplasty type, and adverse post-dehiscence outcomes, especially graft failure and visual loss.
