Article Abstract

A set of semiconductor lasers with different stripe widths is fabricated based on the AlGaInAs/InP heterostructure with an ultra-narrow waveguide. The key characteristics of the lasers (light-current curves (L-I), current-voltage curves (I-V), and spectral and spatial characteristics) are measured, and their dependence on the stripe width is shown. The operating optical power increases from 1.4 W to 4.3 W; however, the lateral brightness decreases from 1.09 W/(mm*mrad) to 0.65 W/(mm*mrad) as the stripe width increases from 20 to 150 μm.

Using diffusion-induced growth instabilities to measure line tension at liquid condensed-liquid expanded domain boundaries.

Few techniques exist for measuring the line tension between liquid-condensed (L) and liquid-expanded (L) monolayer phases important to determining monolayer morphology and interfacial mechanical properties. Two-dimensional Mullins-Sekerka (MS) instability theory and non-perturbative fluorescence microscopy and surface pressure-area isotherms are used to evaluate line tension in monolayers of model lung surfactants composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine, hexadecanol, and cholesterol. The measured line tensions ranging between 7.

Membranes that selectively enhance target solute permeation while rejecting competing species are essential for precision separations. This study introduces charge-patterned mosaic membranes (CMMs) that selectively transport divalent asymmetric salts by leveraging a net-neutral membrane-solution interface. This mechanism, dictated by the charge ratio of positive and negative domains on the membrane surface and the balance of cations and anions in the salt, is supported by analytical, numerical, and experimental results.

One of the critical challenges in designing focusing mirrors based on monolithic high-contrast gratings (MHCGs) is the precise selection of geometrical parameters for each individual stripe, to ensure that the reflected light acquires the required phase shift for focusing at the focal point. However, achieving such precision in practice is hindered by fabrication effects, such as the proximity effect and etching lag, which can significantly alter the final structure. In this article, we numerically investigate the impact of random disruptions in stripe width, non-uniform etching depth caused by variations in air trench widths, and missing grating stripes on the reflectivity and light intensity at the focal point.

A robust and accurate recovery method for contaminated multi-laser stripes is promoted in this paper. First, a noise detection method is employed to locate contaminated laser stripes in an image. This process is mainly aimed at dividing an image containing multiple laser stripes into multiple images, including a single laser stripe to prepare for further analysis.

The femtosecond laser is a promising surface modification tool for zirconia. The influence of femtosecond laser parameters on the micro/nanostructures and mechanical properties of zirconia, however, is not yet clear. In this work, three-level micro/nanostructures, microgrooves, nanoparticle or striped periodic structures, and moss-like structures, were prepared on the surface of zirconia with a femtosecond laser.
