Background: In Germany, current revision rates after arthroplasty range between 28-37%. In particular, remaining cement residues are causative for additional revision surgery after periprosthetic joint infection, which is why complete cement removal is of high importance. However, the removal of remaining cement residues often confronts the surgeon with technical challenges. Complication-free and complete cement removal requires extensive preoperative preparation in order to develop the best possible surgical strategy.
Treatment: Special instrument sets to facilitate cement removal in revision cases are available from various manufacturers. In addition to endoluminal approaches, access enhancements such as extended osteotomies exist to facilitate complete cement removal. Finally, the surgeon should be able to give the indication for an intraoperative procedural change after a defined time interval.

Rapid sand filtration is typically used at water treatment plants to remove the fine suspended solid particles from the raw water. Backwashing of exhausted filter beds inevitably generates large volume of filtration sludge in water treatment plants. In this study, filtration sludge is collected, dried and crushed to powder, then passed through 90 µm sieve to get powdered filtration sludge (PFS) which is then characterized and utilized without energy intensive process of calcination.

Background: Choosing the appropriate implants for reconstruction in revision TKA is essential for long-term fixation. While cones and augments are routinely utilized to address tibial defects, the effect of augment location and size on the biomechanical stability of revision TKA constructs and the indications for the use of metaphyseal cones are not known.
Questions/purposes: Is the risk of cement-implant debonding of revision TKA constructs impacted by the thickness and location (medial versus bicompartmental) of tibial augments and the presence of metaphyseal cones during (1) a demanding daily activity like stair ascent and (2) torsional loads?
Methods: Under institutional review board approval, we developed patient-specific finite-element models of revision TKA from four patients (three males and one female, ages 50 to 80 years, BMI 27 to 37 kg/m2) who underwent two-stage revision and had a CT scan with no metal artifact after first-stage implant removal.

BACKGROUND The treatment of nonunion with deformity and shortening remains a significant challenge in orthopedic surgery. The chipping and lengthening technique is used for bone reconstruction and new bone formation, without the need for bone grafting. However, inadequate bone regeneration can require additional treatment.

With the rapid development of industrialization in China, more and more industrial solid wastes (ISWs) are generated in industrial production processes. Under the pressure for safe disposals or utilization of ISWs as resources, and the demand for soil pollution remediation in China, there have been attempts to incorporate ISWs into agricultural land as soil amendments, while the environmental impacts of ISWs applied on agricultural land have aroused great concerns. This paper presents a comprehensive overview regarding the environmental risks from impacts of 7 types of ISWs (including blast furnace slag, steel slag, magnesium slag, coal-fired flue gas desulfurization gypsum, phosphogypsum, calcium carbide slag, and ammonia-soda residue) applied on agricultural land.
