Article Abstract

Aims: To assess the correlation between calf circumference and cardiac metabolic risk factors such as hypertension, abnormal blood glucose and dyslipidaemia among middle-aged and elderly women.

Methods: The cross-sectional study population consisted of 476 female participants aged 40-80 years, including 304 perimenopausal and 172 postmenopausal women. Calf circumference, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, blood glucose and blood lipids were measured. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the study aims.

Results: Calf circumference was lower in postmenopausal than perimenopausal women, and postmenopausal women had the highest rates of hypertension, abnormal blood glucose and abnormal blood lipids. Pearson correlation coefficients showed that calf circumference was positively correlated with triglycerides (TGs), BMI, fasting plasma glucose (FPG),2-h plasma glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1C), systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure; and negatively correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC). The group with the lowest quantile of calf circumference had higher rates of hypertension (odds ratio (OR)2.14,95% confidence interval (CI)1.67-2.74),dysglycaemia (OR1.40,95%CI1.03-1.90) and dyslipidaemia (OR2.14,95%CI 1.86-2.46).

Conclusion: In perimenopausal women, measurements of calf circumference can be used to predict the presence of cardiac metabolic risk factors, which can be detected by observing blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood lipids.

Associations between masseter and temporal muscle measurements and sarcopenia and nutritional status in older adults.

Radiologie (Heidelb)

September 2025

Department of Geriatric Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Bezmialem Vakif University, Adnan Menderes Bulvarı (Vatan Street), 34093, Fatih, Istanbul, Turkey.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between temporal muscle thickness (TMT) as well as temporal (TMA) and masseter muscle (MMA) area with nutritional status and sarcopenia in older individuals.

Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. A total of 275 participants were evaluated to establish comprehensive geriatric assessment guidelines.

ObjectivesPatients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) often present with limited mobility, which can lead to pain, edema, and reduced ankle range of motion (ROM). The aim of the present study was to compare the inter-rater reliability and construct validity of the Weight-Bearing Lunge Test (WBLT) and traditional goniometry in assessing ankle dorsiflexion ROM in individuals with CVI.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted with 54 patients with CVI (66 ± 11 years; CEAP 1 to 6).

Malnutrition and cachexia in cancer patients, particularly those with lung cancer, represent a pervasive clinical challenge that compromises treatment outcomes, quality of life, and overall survival. This article analyzes the multifactorial etiology of oncological malnutrition, highlighting the chronic inflammatory state, tumor-induced anorexia, and metabolic abnormalities that accelerate muscle and weight loss. It underscores that rates of malnutrition can range from 30% to 80% across different tumor types, with lung cancer patients especially vulnerable due to their high inflammatory burden.

Background: The optimal management of acute Achilles tendon ruptures remains controversial. Open surgical repair (OSR) carries high complication rates, while minimally invasive techniques reduce risks but pose concerns regarding sural nerve injury. This study evaluates the clinical outcomes of ultrasound-assisted minimally invasive repair (MIR) using a double-ended shuttling needle.

: Muscle-specific strength (MSS), defined as muscle strength relative to muscle mass, is a key indicator in the assessment of sarcopenia and functional status, especially in patients with cancer. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the reference method for estimating muscle mass, but its limited accessibility hinders routine use. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between DXA-based MSS and MSS estimated through more accessible techniques.
