Dust, both industrial and household, contains particulates that can reach the most distal aspects of the lung. Silica and nickel compounds are two such particulates and have known profiles of poor health outcomes. While silica is well-characterized, nickel compounds still need to be fully understood for their potential to cause long-term immune responses in the lungs. To assess these hazards and decrease animal numbers used in testing, investigations that lead to verifiable in vitro methods are needed. To understand the implications of these two compounds reaching the distal aspect of the lungs, the alveoli, an architecturally relevant alveolar model consisting of epithelial cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells in a maintained submerged system, was utilized for high throughput testing. Exposures include crystalline silica (SiO) and nickel oxide (NiO). The endpoints measured included mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and cytostructural changes assessed via confocal laser scanning microscopy; cell morphology evaluated via scanning electron microscopy; biochemical reactions assessed via protein arrays; transcriptome assessed via gene arrays, and cell surface activation markers evaluated via flow cytometry. The results showed that, compared to untreated cultures, NiO increased markers for dendritic cell activation, trafficking, and antigen presentation; oxidative stress and cytoskeletal changes, and gene and cytokine expression of neutrophil and other leukocyte chemoattractants. The chemokines and cytokines CCL3, CCL7, CXCL5, IL-6, and IL-8 were identified as potential biomarkers of respiratory sensitization.

Purpose: To evaluate changes in implant stability quotient values of hydrophilic tissue-level implants over time, and to investigate the influence of local factors on variations in these values.
Methods: Fifty tapered, self-tapping, tissue-level implants with a hydrophilic surface were placed and monitored for 12 months. Implant stability quotient values were recorded at the time of insertion (T0) and monthly thereafter for 12 months.

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to cause significant global mortality, highlighting the need for improved drug delivery systems. The objective of this paper focuses in describing the formulation, optimization and in vivo assessment of rifampicin encapsulated PLGA microparticles for site-specific inhalation therapy. Microparticles for inhalation were produced by spray drying, and the DoE methodology was applied to reach the most suitable aerodynamic properties (mass median aerodynamics diameter (MMAD) 2.

Objectives: This umbrella meta-analysis aimed to answer the clinical question: Do mini-screws and micro-implants improve specific orthodontic outcomes such as intermolar width, interpremolar width, suture expansion, molar movement, and skeletal width compared to conventional anchorage methods?
Materials And Methods: A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Google Scholar up to October 2024. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses on mini-screws and micro-implants in orthodontic treatment were included. Methodological quality was assessed using AMSTAR 2, and a random-effects model was used to calculate effect sizes (ESs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

The lung undergoes continuous remodeling throughout normal development and aging, including changes to alveolar and capillary structure and function. While histological methods allow for static analysis of these age-related changes, characterizing the changes that occur in response to mechanical stimuli remains difficult, particularly over a dynamic, physiologically relevant range in a functioning lung. Alveolar and capillary distension - the change in diameter of alveoli and capillaries, respectively, in response to pressure changes - is one such process, where dynamically controlling and monitoring the diameter of the same capillary or alveolus is essential to inferring its mechanical properties.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has caused tremendous economic losses in the swine industry since emerging in the late 1980s. Although vaccination has been widely used to control PRRS epidemics in Chinese pig farms, they provided limited protection against PRRSV transmission; moreover, no effective therapeutic drugs are available. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel antiviral strategies to control PRRSV epidemics.
