Quorum sensing (QS) is a widespread signaling mechanism in bacteria that coordinates collective behaviors according to population density. A foundational assumption in this field is that QS functions as a gene expression switch that synchronizes responses at the population level. While some studies indeed report homogeneous on/off transitions, others report heterogeneity at the cellular level, challenging the canonical view.

The Kuramoto model, a paradigmatic framework for studying synchronization, exhibits a transition to collective oscillations only above a critical coupling strength in the thermodynamic limit. However, real-world systems are finite, and their dynamics can deviate significantly from mean-field predictions. Here, we investigate finite-size effects in the Kuramoto model below the critical coupling, where the theory in the thermodynamic limit predicts complete asynchrony.

Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) requires a healthy and functional peritoneal membrane for adequate ultrafiltration and fluid balance, making it a vital treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The spectrum of PD-associated peritoneal fibrosis encompasses a diverse range of collective mechanisms: peritoneal fibrogenesis, epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), peritonitis, angiogenesis, sub-mesothelial immune cells infiltration, and collagen deposition in the sub-mesothelial compact zone of the membrane that accompany deteriorating membrane function. In this narrative review, we summarize the repertoire of current knowledge about the structure, function, and pathophysiology of the peritoneal membrane, focusing on biomolecular mechanisms and signalling pathways that potentiate the development and progression of peritoneal fibrosis.

Shifting towards a circular economy in the built environment is considered an important step toward fostering environmentally sustainable and socially resilient cities. Housing cooperatives, established to provide affordable and democratically governed housing, may offer structural advantages for embedding circularity - but their role in circular transitions remains underexplored. This study investigates how cooperative governance may influence the implementation of circular strategies, including circular design, product-service systems, and shared resource models, across different housing types.

Recent findings suggest that higher-order (group) interactions provide a general pathway to explosive phenomena in networks of coupled oscillators. While these abrupt, first-order transitions, termed explosive synchronization, are of significant theoretical interest, they are often undesirable and potentially dangerous in many real-world systems. Motivated by this, we investigate a control mechanism to suppress explosive synchronization in adaptive multilayer networks incorporating higher-order interactions by introducing a phase lag into the system.
