Article Abstract

Pre-existing tetracycline resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae limits the effectiveness of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) with doxycycline against gonorrhea, and selection for tetracycline resistance may influence prevalence of multi-drug resistant strains. Using genomic and antimicrobial susceptibility data from N. gonorrhoeae, we assessed the near-term impact of doxycycline PEP on N. gonorrhoeae resistance.

Antenatal betamethasone impairs markers of cardiac development and function in near-term lambs.

Early Origins of Adult Health Research Group, Health and Biomedical Innovation; UniSA: Clinical and Health Sciences, University of South Australia, Adelaide, SA, Australia.

Antenatal corticosteroids are commonly administered to promote fetal lung maturation; however, their impact on heart development is not well understood. This study therefore investigated the effects of antenatal betamethasone on cardiac development in near-term lambs, using tissues collected from a cohort of ewes with mild experimentally induced asthma. Pregnant ewes received two doses of either saline (Saline) or betamethasone (Betamethasone, intramuscular, 11.

Geologically storing carbon is a key strategy for abating emissions from fossil fuels and durably removing carbon dioxide (CO) from the atmosphere. However, the storage potential is not unlimited. Here we establish a prudent planetary limit of around 1,460 (1,290-2,710) Gt of CO storage through a risk-based, spatially explicit analysis of carbon storage in sedimentary basins.

In the 30 years since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, there is no clear consensus on how to best measure population-level contraceptive use and family planning program impact. Widely used metrics have evolved relatively slowly, and some have run counter to a rights-based and person-centered approach that emphasizes individuals' self-identified contraceptive preferences. In this report, we describe the utilization of an understudied family planning measure-women's expressed intent to use (ITU) contraceptives within the next year-and explore its implications for population-level standardized comparisons and family planning programs using the Performance Monitoring for Action program data in 10 low- and middle-income geographies.

Variational quantum eigensolvers are touted as a near-term algorithm capable of impacting many applications. However, the potential has not yet been realized, with few claims of quantum advantage and high resource estimates, especially due to the need for optimization in the presence of noise. Finding algorithms and methods to improve convergence is important to accelerate the capabilities of near-term hardware for variational quantum eigensolver or more broad applications of hybrid methods in which optimization is required.
