Article Abstract

We report a unique vinyl coordination polymer (CP), [Zn(4-Fb) (tkpvb)] (1, 4-HFb=4-fluorobenzoic acid, tkpvb=1,2,4,5-tetrakis(4-pyridylvinyl)benzene) that undergoes a rare photopolymerization reaction to form a two-dimensional CP integrated with a one-dimensional linear organic polymer. Upon light irradiation at different wavelengths, 1 exhibits an unprecedented phenomenon of photoinduced nonlinear lattice expansion. 1 can be uniformly dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form the composite film of 1-PVA. When this film is exposed to UV light, internal minute stresses within crystallites are released by lattice expansion, resulting in a variety of photopolymerization-driven macroscopic mechanical motions. The findings provide new insights into the conversion of small lattice expansions of CPs into macroscopic mechanical motions based on photopolymerization reactions, which can promote the development of CPs-based smart photoactuators in the burgeoning field of microrobotics.

Effect of C-Terminal Residue on the Phase Behavior and Properties of β-Sheet Forming Self-Assembling Peptide Hydrogels.

Biomacromolecules

September 2025

Division of Pharmacy and Optometry, Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, M13 9PL Manchester, U.K.

This study investigates how hydrophobic and hydrophilic modifications at the C-terminus of the base peptide, KFEFEFKFK (KbpK), affect the hydrogel macroscopic properties. By the incorporation of phenylalanine (F, hydrophobic) and lysine (K, hydrophilic) residues, four variants, KbpK-K, KbpK-F, KbpK-KF, and KbpK-FK, were designed and evaluated. pH-concentration phase diagrams and Fourier transform infrared confirmed clear links showing how peptide hydrophobicity and charge influence β-sheet formation and macroscopic phase behavior.

Short-Time Relaxation and Anomalous Diffusion in Dynamic Covalent Networks.

ACS Macro Lett

Introducing dynamic covalent chemistries into polymer networks allows access to complex linear viscoelasticity, owing to the reversible nature of the dynamic bonds. While this macroscopic mechanical behavior is influenced by the dynamic exchange of these chemistries, connecting the microscopic dynamics to the bulk properties is hindered by the time scale conventional techniques can observe. Here, light scattering passive microrheology is applied to probe short-time dynamics of dynamic covalent networks that consist of telechelic benzalcyanoacetate (BCA) Michael acceptors and thiol-functionalized cross-linkers.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, relapsing disease that poses significant challenges in treatment. This study aimed to develop silk fibroin-based mesalazine and chitosan:TNF-α siRNA polyplex-loaded, 3D bioprinted hydrogels for the oral treatment of IBD. For this purpose, bioink formulations composed of silk fibroin, hyaluronic acid, and sodium alginate were optimized.

Background: Umbilical cord hemorrhage (UCH) is a rare but catastrophic obstetric emergency associated with nearly 50% fetal mortality, and its precise pathogenic mechanisms remain elusive in clinical practice. The pathophysiological cascade involves hemorrhagic expansion from ruptured umbilical vessels predominantly the umbilical vein which generates compressive forces on adjacent umbilical arteries within the constrained Wharton's jelly. This acute vascular compromise precipitates the sudden cessation of fetoplacental circulation, culminating in irreversible hypoxic-ischemic injury.

Oil leak accidents result in considerable water contamination, severely impacting both the environment and the economy. Thus, prompt and effective responses to clean up oil spills are essential. In this research, an innovative device-a plastic boat-is developed to collect spilled oil on the water surface.
