In this work, the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was modified by a phosphazene compound to prepare a novel amorphous derivate (β-CDCP), which was combined with the ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as a synergistic flame retardant (FR) of the bio-based poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA). The effects of the APP/β-CDCP on the thermal stability, combustion behavior, pyrolysis process, fire resistance performance and crystallizability of the PLA were investigated comprehensively and in depth by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, limited oxygen index (LOI) analysis, UL-94 test, cone calorimetry measurement, TG-infrared (TG-IR), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometer, Raman spectroscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and differential scanning calorimetry. The PLA/5%APP/10%β-CDCP showed a highest LOI of 33.2 %, passed V-0 rating and exhibited self-extinguish phenomenon in the UL-94 test. Also, it presented a lowest peak of heat release rate, total heat release, peak of smoke production rate and total smoke release, and a highest char yield treated by cone calorimetry analysis. In addition, the 5%APP/10%β-CDCP shortened significantly crystallization time and enhanced crystallization rate of the PLA. Gas phase and intumescent condensed phase fire proofing mechanisms are proposed to elucidate enhanced fire resistance in this system in detail.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology represents an innovative and high-efficiency desalination approach. This technology plays a crucial role in relieving the shortage of worldwide freshwater resources. However, the interfacial evaporator still faces great challenges in terms of high efficiency and ensuring long-term evaporation stability, among other aspects.

Increasing wildfire activity in mesic, temperate Pacific Northwest forests west of the Cascade Range crest has stimulated interest in understanding whether alternative forest management practices could reduce risk of stand-replacing fire. To explore how management can enhance fire resistance in these forests and assess tradeoffs among resistance enhancement, carbon sequestration and storage, and economic returns, we conducted 40-year simulations of stand development with BioSum, a framework for conducting landscape analysis with the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), utilizing a statistically representative and spatially balanced sample of Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plots. Simulation outcomes under business-as-usual silviculture were contrasted with fire-aware silviculture, and treatment optimization logic was developed and applied to represent landscape-scale outcomes under business-as-usual and fire-focused management scenarios.

The LiAlTi(PO) (LATP)-polymer composite solid electrolyte offers environmental stability and safety for high-energy lithium metal batteries (LMBs), yet suffers from interfacial instability and high interfacial resistance. Herein, a Janus self-supporting skeleton (J-SSK) is engineered via multi-scale coupling of poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene) (PVDF-TrFE), LATP, 2-(3-(6-methyl-4-oxo-1,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-yl) ureido) ethyl methacrylate (UPyMA) monomer, where intermolecular multiple hydrogen bonds reinforce mechanical robustness while the Janus structure isolates LATP from direct Li contact. In situ copolymerizing vinylene carbonate (VC) and UPyMA monomer in J-SSK to construct Janus composite quasi-solid electrolyte (J-CQSE) achieves seamless integration of electrode/electrolyte interfaces and establishes hierarchical coupling across J-SSK, polymer matrix, and lithium salts.

The use of highly flammable materials such as foams, resins, and plastics has led to an increase in the frequency and severity of urban fires worldwide. To address this issue, this study developed a high-specific-surface-area mesoporous metal-organic framework (Fe-MOFs) with heat trapping and smoke adsorption. The Fe-MOFs, zinc tailings (ZTs), piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP), and sodium lignosulfonate (LS) were used to modify rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF).

Premise: Humans have used fire to manage landscapes for millennia, but this use of fire is declining in many ecosystems. Understanding how plants respond to these changes is key to predicting ecosystem resilience and impacts on services such as biodiversity and carbon sequestration. However, many ecosystems lack data on plant fire responses.
