Article Abstract

The diagnostic and treatment outcomes of intracranial germ cell tumors (ICGCTs) among low and middle income countries are limited. A total of 63 ICGCTs patients with a median age of 11.6 years were studied. A 30 (47.6%) and 33 (52.4%) patients were classified as pure germinomas and nongerminomatous germ cell tumors (NGGCTs), respectively. The concordances between serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) alpha-fetoprotein (84.3%) and beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (68.4%) were addressed. The 5-year overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) rates of pure germinomas versus NGGCTs were 83.9 versus 69.1% and 74.6 versus 57.7%, respectively. Patients undergoing radiation had higher 5-year OS and EFS than those without radiation treatment with  < .001. Chemotherapy combined with radiation is a cornerstone treatment to achieve outcomes. Adverse prognostic factors included age <8 years, surgery, and nonradiation treatment. Either serum or CSF tumor markers were adequately required as a diagnostic test among patients with ICGCTs.

Mediastinal masses often present acutely as medical emergencies, necessitating prompt and accurate diagnosis. Imaging-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) plays a pivotal role in rapidly identifying rare mediastinal tumours and differentiating them from other potential aetiologies, enabling timely intervention. Primary mediastinal germ cell tumours (PMGCTs) constitute approximately 15% of adult mediastinal neoplasms.

SLC16A3 (MCT4) expression in tumor immunity and Metabolism: Insights from pan-cancer analysis.

Biochem Biophys Rep

June 2025

The Affiliated Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China.

Background: SLC16A3, a highly expressed H + -coupled symporter, facilitates lactate transport via monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs), contributing to acidosis. Although SLC16A3 has been implicated in tumor development, its role in tumor immunity remains unclear.

Methods: A pan-cancer analysis was conducted using datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas, Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia, and Genotype-Tissue Expression projects.

Background: While testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) survival exceeds 90%, many survivors of adult TGCT are at risk for treatment toxicities. Less is known about physical morbidities in children, adolescents, and young adults (CAYA) with TGCT.

Methods: We used the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario Networked Information System, the Initiative to Maximize Progress in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Therapy, and the Ontario Cancer Registry to identify all CAYA males diagnosed with TGCT from 1992 to 2021 at age 11-21 years in Ontario, Canada.

Establishment and optimization of the two-step induction system for generating primordial germ cell-like cells from chicken embryonic stem cells.

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the progenitor cells of sperm and eggs. Xenotransplantation of chicken PGCs can achieve germline transmission. However, there are still challenges in obtaining many PGCs from endangered birds in vitro.

The melanocortin-1-receptor (MC1R) has a key role in melanocyte pigmentation regulation. Certain MC1R germline genetic variants (R alleles) result in deficient melanin production and are associated with red hair, freckling, UV sensitivity, and melanoma susceptibility. We aimed to address whether inherited polymorphisms in MC1R impact the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in patients with metastatic melanoma.
