This article reports on vowel clarity metrics based on spectrotemporal modulations of speech signals. Motivated by previous findings on the relevance of modulation-based metrics for speech intelligibility assessment and pathology classification, the current study used factor analysis to identify regions within a bi-dimensional modulation space, the magnitude power spectrum, as in Elliott and Theunissen [(2009). PLoS Comput. Biol. 5(3), e1000302] by relating them to a set of conventional acoustic metrics of vowel space area and vowel distinctiveness. Two indices based on the energy ratio between high and low modulation rates across temporal and spectral dimensions of the modulation space emerged from the analyses. These indices served as input for measurements of central tendency and classification analyses that aimed to identify vowel-related speech impairments in French native speakers with head and neck cancer (HNC) and Parkinson dysarthria (PD). Following the analysis, vowel-related speech impairment was identified in HNC speakers, but not in PD. These results were consistent with findings based on subjective evaluations of speech intelligibility. The findings reported are consistent with previous studies indicating that impaired speech is associated with attenuation in energy in higher spectrotemporal modulation bands.

This is the first comprehensive study to examine the feasibility of using acoustic measures to characterize coarticulatory dynamics in Arabic speakers with Broca's aphasia, addressing a significant gap in the literature and contributing to both universal and culturally specific understandings of coarticulatory timing in aphasia. Five Palestinian Arabic-speaking participants with Broca's aphasia and five control speakers completed a repetition task involving initial fricative-vowel syllables. Using PRAAT software, the analysis incorporates both static and dynamic acoustic parameters, including formant values (F2 and F3), transition slopes and variability, Voice Onset Time (VOT), and intensity measures.

Listener-oriented accounts of phonetic enhancement propose that talkers produce enhanced vowels to increase clarity when their interlocutor might experience communicative difficulty, e.g., for non-native interlocutors or for an unpredictable word given the semantic context.

Purpose: This study investigated relationships within and between perceptual, acoustic, and kinematic measures in speakers with and without dysarthria due to Parkinson's disease (PD) across different clarity conditions. Additionally, the study assessed the predictive capabilities of selected acoustic and kinematic measures for intelligibility and articulatory precision ratings.
Method: Forty participants, comprising 22 with PD and 18 controls, read three phrases aloud using conversational, less clear, and more clear speaking conditions.

The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics and error speech features of cleft-related lateral misarticulation and provide a basis for clinical evaluation and rational intervention. Participants who were diagnosed with lateral misarticulation after cleft palate repairment were 126 children aged 4, 6 to 16, and 11, and they had complete palatopharyngeal closure, no abnormalities in their speech organs and occlusion, and no hearing or intellectual impairments. The Chinese standard pronunciation clarity word list, the American KAY CSL4500, the Beijing Yangchen YF-16 computer speech analysis workstation, soundproof rooms, Wechsler scales of intelligence-fourth edition, and audiometers were used to evaluate the cleft-related lateral misarticulation.

Humans rely on auditory feedback to monitor and adjust their speech for clarity. Cochlear implants (CIs) have helped over a million people restore access to auditory feedback, which significantly improves speech production. However, there is substantial variability in outcomes.
