Enhancing blood culture volume with ultrathin-wall cannula devices.

J Clin Microbiol

September 2025

Becton, Dickinson, and Company, Diagnostic Solutions, Sparks, Maryland, USA.

Suboptimal blood volume collection negatively affects pathogen recovery and time to pathogen detection in clinical blood culture samples. This study evaluated the performance of the ultrathin-wall cannula device of the BD Vacutainer UltraTouch Push Button Blood Collection Set (UltraTouch; BD Life Sciences, Franklin Lakes, NJ) in increasing the blood volume collected compared to regular cannulas. In this retrospective study, the volume of blood collected in negative BD BACTEC Plus Aerobic/F Culture Vials prior to and following blind conversion to UltraTouch was measured from blood background metabolic activity signal acquired during the initial incubation period in the BD BACTEC FX instrument using a custom software application (patent pending).

With the rapid development of industrialization in China, more and more industrial solid wastes (ISWs) are generated in industrial production processes. Under the pressure for safe disposals or utilization of ISWs as resources, and the demand for soil pollution remediation in China, there have been attempts to incorporate ISWs into agricultural land as soil amendments, while the environmental impacts of ISWs applied on agricultural land have aroused great concerns. This paper presents a comprehensive overview regarding the environmental risks from impacts of 7 types of ISWs (including blast furnace slag, steel slag, magnesium slag, coal-fired flue gas desulfurization gypsum, phosphogypsum, calcium carbide slag, and ammonia-soda residue) applied on agricultural land.

Despite the various advantages of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), the paradoxes of high luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) efficiency and low quantum yield remain a bottleneck for broader sensing applications. Herein, novel sandwich-structured UCNPs (SWUCNPs, NaYbF:(30%Gd)@NaYbF:Er(2%)@NaYF) with a core-middle shell-outer shell structure were synthesized. The SWUCNPs maintained a high LRET efficiency by confining the luminescent center of Er in the middle shell.

Selective removal of aromatic contaminants from water matrices poses substantial difficulties in environmental remediation processes, necessitating sophisticated materials with discriminatory molecular recognition properties. Herein, we report a framework-elastomer hybrid membrane containing [Co(4-pmntd)(NO)] (4-pmntd represents ,'-bis(4-pyridylmethyl)naphthalene diimide) designed for effective toluene recovery from trace aqueous environments. Systematic structural analysis employing crystallographic diffraction, gas adsorption measurements, surface electron spectroscopy, and proton nuclear magnetic resonance elucidates the material's architectural characteristics and surface phenomena.

Water quality of reclaimed lakes in post-mining locations of Czech Republic.

Environ Monit Assess

September 2025

Microbiology Section, Food Business Unit, ALS Czech Republic, Na Harfe 336/9, Prague 9, 190 00, Czech Republic.

Post-mining lakes in the Czech Republic, especially in North Bohemia, represent distinctive opportunities for ecological transformation of degraded landscapes. Such lakes form in closed open-pit mines, where they create new water and wetland habitats. The ecological development of such systems is strongly affected by water quality, which is often impaired by residual contamination from mining and nutrient imbalances.
