Solar desalination is one of the most promising strategies to address the global freshwater shortage crisis. However, the residual salt accumulated on the top surface of solar evaporators severely reduces light absorption and steam evaporation efficiency, thus impeding the further industrialization of this technology. Herein, a metal-phenolic network (MPN)-engineered 3D evaporator composed of photothermal superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic sponges and side-twining hydrophilic threads for efficient desalination with directional salt crystallization and zero liquid discharge is reported. The MPN coatings afford the engineering of alternating photothermal superhydrophilic/superhydrophobic sponges with high heating efficiency and defined vapor escape channels, while the side-twining threads induce site-selective salt crystallization. The 3D evaporator exhibits a high and stable indoor desalination rate (≈2.3 kg m h ) of concentrated seawater (20 wt%) under simulated sun irradiation for over 21 days without the need for salt crystallization inhibitors. This direct desalination is also achieved in outdoor field operations with a production rate of clean water up to ≈1.82 kg m h from concentrated seawater (10 wt%). Together with the high affinity and multiple functions of MPNs, this work is expected to facilitate the rational design of solar desalination devices and boost the research translation of MPN materials in broader applications.

We have established a new route for boron-rich ruthenaborane clusters utilizing [BH·THF] and a ruthenium precursor featuring chelating ligands. Salt elimination reactions between [K(CHNE)], (E = S; Se) and [RuCl(PPh)], afforded -[Ru(κ--CHNE)(PPh)], -- (-: E = S and -: E = Se). Following the ligand exchange reaction with the 1,2-bis (diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) ligand yielded -[Ru(κ--CHNE)(dppe)] (-: E = S; -: E = Se).

Inspired by the rigid exoskeleton and elastic inner tissues of crustaceans, a bilayer gel integrating high-strength rigidity and soft cushioning with high interfacial adhesion (1060 ± 40 J m ) is developed via a stepwise solid-liquid phase crosslinking strategy. Herein, a prefrozen high-concentration polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution forms a solid-state structural framework, while a subsequently cast low-concentration PVA solution generates a flexible layer. Partial thawing of the frozen gel during casting triggers molecular chain interpenetration at the interface, synergistically enhanced by controlled molecular penetration, freeze-thaw cycles, and salt-induced crystallization.

Global water scarcity demands next-generation desalination technologies that transcend the limitations of energy-intensive processes and salt accumulation. Herein, a groundbreaking interfacial solar steam generation system capable of simultaneous hypersaline desalination and ambient energy harvesting is introduced. Through hierarchical hydrogel architecture incorporating a central vertical channel and radial channels with gradient apertures, the design effectively decouples salt transport and water evaporation: solar-driven fluid convection directs water outward for evaporation, while inward salt migration prevents surface crystallization and redistributes excess heat.

Phosphorylated structural analogs of Benzalkonium Chloride-diisopropoxyphosphorylmethane (dimethyldodecylammonium) bromide 1 (phosphorylated quaternary ammonium salt) and isopropoxyphosphorylmethane (dimethylalkylammonium) 2 (phosphorylated betaine) were synthesized. The structure of compound 1 was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction study. The antibacterial, antifungal, and ecotoxicological profiles of the synthesized compounds were evaluated against aquatic organisms and flowering plants.
