Two-dimensional van der Waals magnetic semiconductors display emergent chemical and physical properties and hold promise for novel optical, electronic and magnetic "few-layers" functionalities. Transition-metal iodides such as CrI and VI are relevant for future electronic and spintronic applications; however, detailed experimental information on their ground state electronic properties is lacking often due to their challenging chemical environment. By combining X-ray electron spectroscopies and first-principles calculations, we report a complete determination of CrI and VI electronic ground states. We show that the transition metal-induced orbital filling drives the stabilization of distinct electronic phases: a wide bandgap in CrI and a Mott insulating state in VI. Comparison of surface-sensitive (angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy) and bulk-sensitive (X-ray absorption spectroscopy) measurements in VI reveals a surface-only V oxidation state, suggesting that ground state electronic properties are strongly influenced by dimensionality effects. Our results have direct implications in band engineering and layer-dependent properties of two-dimensional systems.

Background: Failure to fail involves assigning passing grades to students who have not achieved course or clinical objectives at a satisfactory level. The literature has shown that this phenomenon occurs more frequently in the clinical setting due to several issues, including the increased subjectivity of clinical evaluation tools and processes, unclear policies, and lack of administrative support to fail students. The question remains: What is the thought process that is used by faculty to determine if a student passes or fails in a clinical experience?
Purpose: To explore the decision-making process used by pre-licensure clinical nursing faculty when they are determining whether to pass or fail an unsafe student enrolled in a clinical course.

Fly ash (FA) landfills are overflowing with materials, and unexplored waste streams like waste spent garnet (WSG) and waste foundry sand (WFS) are often dumped in onsite storage spaces, limiting land availability for future use and exacerbating environmental concerns related to waste disposal. Therefore, this research proposes recycling FA to produce reclaimed FA (RFA) as a binder, replacing 40-60% of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and 30-50% of river sand (RS) with WSG and WFS to produce geopolymers. The performance of geopolymers was assessed under different curing regimes, including ambient-temperature curing (ATC), ambient-temperature water curing (AWC), high-temperature curing (HTC), and high-temperature water curing (HWC).

The Anatolian ground squirrel (Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) offers a valuable model for investigating neuroadaptive processes in the retina during hibernation. This study aimed to assess the expression of vesicular glutamate transporter 1 (VGLUT1), glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) isoforms GAD65 and GAD67, and microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) in the retina during pre-hibernation and hibernation states.
