Article Abstract

This article reports the changes to virus taxonomy approved and ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) in March 2022. The entire ICTV was invited to vote on 174 taxonomic proposals approved by the ICTV Executive Committee at its annual meeting in July 2021. All proposals were ratified by an absolute majority of the ICTV members. Of note, the Study Groups have started to implement the new rule for uniform virus species naming that became effective in 2021 and mandates the binomial 'Genus_name species_epithet' format with or without Latinization. As a result of this ratification, the names of 6,481 virus species (more than 60 percent of all species names currently recognized by ICTV) now follow this format.

The class Hexacorallia, encompassing stony corals and sea anemones, plays a critical role in marine ecosystems. Coral bleaching, the disruption of the symbiosis between stony corals and zooxanthellate algae, is driven by seawater warming and further exacerbated by pathogenic microbes. However, how pathogens, especially viruses, contribute to accelerated bleaching remains poorly understood.

Background: The Transfusion-Transmissible Infections Monitoring System assesses trends in ~60% of the US blood supply. Donors with high-risk behaviors, including injection drug use, men having sex with other men, or exchanging sex for money/drugs were deferred for 12 months (12M) from 2016 to 2020 and 3 months (3M) from 2020 to 2023. Here we evaluate HIV, HBV, and HCV incidence and window-period residual risk (WPRR) in two ~3-year periods of 12M (2017-2020) and 3M (2020-2023) to identify any differences.

Introduction: Chemotherapy remains essential despite advances in immunotherapy, radiotherapy, and biological therapy. However, the wide range of chemical drugs is limited by a narrow therapeutic index, low selectivity, and the development of resistance. In this regard, new high-efficiency drugs are in extremely high demand.

Introduction: Rhinovirus (RV) is the leading cause of exacerbations of lung disease. A sensory neuronal model, derived from human dental pulp stem cells and differentiated into peripheral neuronal equivalents (PNEs), was used to examine RV's effects on airway sensory nerves. We investigated whether RV can directly infect and alter PNEs or whether it exerts effects indirectly via the release of mediators from infected epithelial cells.

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of respiratory infections in infants and young children. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted global RSV epidemiology. This study aimed to investigate the impact of the pandemic on RSV epidemiology in northern Taiwan from 2018 to 2023.
