Article Abstract

So far, research on the microalga has been focused mainly on the exploitation of its high astaxanthin content, leaving aside the use of other bioactive compounds present. This study is focused on obtaining and characterizing extracts enriched in bioactive compounds from this microalga red aplanospores. This is performed by means of Matrix Solid-Phase Dispersion (MSPD) extraction process, in an environmentally friendly way with low energy consumption and GRAS solvents. The effects of extraction parameters, particularly the extraction solvents (ethanol, ethyl lactate and water) are studied, in order to obtain maximum recovery of the main antioxidant compounds of interest (carotenoids, fatty acids and derivatives). Characterization of extracts is carried out by HPLC-DAD (High Performance Liquid Chromatography Diode Array Detector) and UHPLC-QToF (Ultra High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Quadrupole Time-of-Flight). The results show that MSPD produced extracts with higher bioactive compound recoveries than conventional cell disruption extractions. At the same time, a novel untargeted characterization for this species is performed, identifying compounds not previously dated in , which include 10-phenyldecanoic acid and the -oxo and -hydroxy derivatives of palmitic acid. This approach, first applied to a freshwater microalgae, characterized by rigid and resistant aplanospores, provided a synergistic and sustainable extract, giving a broader focus on the use of this microalga.

Chemical alteration of UO micro-particles in model lung systems.

J Hazard Mater

August 2025

Radiochemistry Unit, Department of Chemistry, The University of Helsinki, Helsinki 00560, Finland. Electronic address:

Uranium dioxide (UO) particles can be released from mines, nuclear fuel manufacturing, reactor accidents, and weapons use. They pose inhalation risks, yet their behavior in the human lung remains poorly understood. This study investigates the long-term chemical alteration and dissolution of µm-sized UO particles in two model lung fluids: Simulated Lung Fluid (SLF) and Artificial Lysosomal Fluid (ALF), representing extracellular and intracellular lung environments, respectively.

Fungal pathogens pose a growing threat to global health, necessitating rapid and accurate identification methods. Here, liquid atmospheric pressure matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation (LAP-MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) is applied to fast lipid and protein profiling of Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae from cultured colonies. Species-specific lipid profiles were observed in the m/z 600-1100 range, dominated by phospholipids as confirmed by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS).

Background: High-throughput solid-phase extraction coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HT-SPE-MS/MS) is an automated sample delivery system to mass spectrometry that operates without chromatographic separation. The typical analysis time per sample using this platform is 10-30 s. While the HT-SPE-MS/MS system has demonstrated efficacy for in vitro assays, its application to the analysis of biological samples from in vivo bioavailability and bioequivalence studies presents challenges due to the complexity of the sample matrix.

The consumption of agricultural products has increased in recent years owing to abundant production and improved living standards. Veterinary drugs are highly commercialized and widely used in animal husbandry to ensure animal health and production performance. Moreover, pesticides can become enriched during animal breeding, resulting in animal-derived food pollution through foraging, drinking, and environmental disinfection that can potentially damage human health.

Urine samples are gaining increasing importance as preferred biological matrices in bioanalytical studies due to their non-invasive collection, abundance, and ability to reflect systemic metabolism. However, conventional urine sampling and storage methods face significant challenges, especially in resource-limited areas where transportation and preservation infrastructure are inadequate. Traditional methods of liquid urine collection require refrigeration to prevent analyte degradation, making long-term storage and global sample transport costly and impractical.
