Article Abstract

Oceanography and limnology projects often require the collection of water samples for chemical analysis. Manual water sample collection is labor-intensive and often difficult, especially in remote locations or during nighttime hours. Here we describe a compact and inexpensive autonomous submersible multiport water sampler (AutoSampler) that is largely fabricated with off-the-shelf parts making it easier to build and maintain. The system can collect up to 12 discrete samples at user controllable times or intervals and is operated using open source Arduino hardware and software that can be user modified to meet deployment requirements. While the underwater pressure housing presented here is custom built from readily available materials, there are many commercially available pressure case options that can be used as a substitute. The electronic mounting plates and battery pack are designed so that they can easily be adapted to fit into other pressure case housings. Samples can be collected into bags or syringes and sample volume is set by adjusting how long the peristaltic pump is actuated. This AutoSampler allows research that would otherwise be too labor-intensive or logistically difficult to conduct, especially in remote locations.

The performance of hydrogel electrolytes is strongly related to their structure-property relationships and interactions with other materials, determining ionic conductivity, mechanical stability, operating voltage, and electrochemical performance in flexible supercapacitor (SC) applications. Here, we incorporate polyanionic alginate into a polyacrylamide hydrogel followed by immersion in electrolytes of varying concentrations to form polyanionic hydrogel electrolytes. The carboxylate groups within the hydrogel network facilitate ion transportation while restricting water activity, preventing water decomposition at high voltages, and expanding the SC voltage window.

: SARS-CoV-2 booster vaccination remains essential to prevent severe COVID-19, particularly in vulnerable populations such as older adults. This study evaluated the durability and dynamics of immune responses following booster vaccination(s) in >65-year-old individuals and examined their association with protection against new infections. : Immune responses were evaluated at 3, 9, and 15 months post-booster, measuring SARS-CoV-2-specific IgG antibodies against spike [IgG(S)] and nucleocapsid [IgG(N)] proteins, neutralizing activity against the Omicron BA.

As part of a microsurgical anatomy study of the recurrent artery of Heubner (RAH), we identified three rare vascular variants in a 45-year-old female cadaver: the right middle accessory cerebral artery (MACA), bihemispheric anterior cerebral artery (Bihem-ACA), and median artery of the corpus callosum (MACC). These anomalies were documented through meticulous dissection and detailed morphometric analysis, underscoring the value of cadaveric studies in elucidating complex cerebral vascular anatomy. The specimen was obtained within 24 hours postmortem.

A β-lactoglobulin amyloid fibrils-poly(vinyl alcohol)-Ag nanoparticles (β-LAFs-PVA-AgNPs) hydrogel was prepared as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with adsorbent β-lactoglobulin amyloid fibrils (β-LAFs) structured into the network structure of the hydrogel using the immersion reduction method. Due to the high swelling and contraction properties of the hydrogel in different states and the "sieving" nature of its network cavities, small molecular target analytes can more easily enter the space-confined hydrogel and rapidly bind with the amide bonds of the protein structure. During the contraction process of the hydrogel, the target analytes are enriched, and the Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) come closer together to form Raman "hot spots", generating stronger SERS signals.
