Article Abstract

The human skin sebum suggests that it (along with other epidermal surface lipids) plays a role in skin barrier formation, the moderation of cutaneous inflammation, and antimicrobial defense. Various methods have been developed for collecting and measuring skin sebum. We tested methods of detection using "color intensity", by staining the skin casual sebum. This process was conducted in three steps; first, the selection of materials for sebum collection; second, staining the collected sebum; third, the development of a device that can measure the level of stained sebum. A plastic film was used to effectively collect sebum that increased with the replacement time of the sebum. In addition, the collected sebum was stained with Oil Red O (ORO) and checked with RGB; as a result, the R value was higher than 0.9. It was also confirmed that the correlation value was higher than 0.9 in the comparison result with Sebumeter, which is a common standard technology. Finally, it was confirmed that the R value was higher than 0.9 in the detection value using the sensor. In conclusion, we have proven the proof of concept (PoC) for this method, and we would like to introduce an effective sebum measurement method that differs from the existing method.

Acne is a multifactorial dermatological condition driven by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) infection, inflammation, and sebum dysregulation. While essential oils, such as Angelica sinensis (Danggui) essential oil (AEO), exhibit antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, their clinical application is hindered by poor solubility, stability, and skin penetration.

Sebum secreted by sebaceous glands mixes with sweat to form a protective film that aids in maintaining skin health. Reduced sebum production compromises such barrier functions, potentially leading to severe itchiness and inflammation. Therefore, incorporating moisturizers with ingredients promoting sebum secretion is desirable.

: As a common inflammatory skin disorder, acne vulgaris is classically associated with sebum overproduction, follicular hyper keratinization, and proliferation. Emerging evidence suggests a link between severe or treatment-resistant acne and metabolic syndrome, characterized by central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. This case series aims to explore the clinical overlap between acne and metabolic dysfunction and highlight the relevance of multidisciplinary evaluation.

Sex hormones regulating the menstrual cycle influence sebaceous gland cell lipogenesis and the feeling of skin oiliness or dryness on the face. The aim of this study was to elucidate sebaceous lipogenesis in females during the menstrual cycle and define their facial sebum composition. Sebum was sampled from cheeks and foreheads in 38 Chinese women, 19 with sebometry ≤ 70 μg/cm (low sebometry group, LS), and 19 with sebometry ≥ 150 μg/cm (high sebometry group, HS), in the ovulation phase (OP) and in the early luteal phase (ELP).

Background: Skin quality affects both external perception and psychological well-being. A decline in skin quality, as seen in acne tarda or due to prolonged mask use, especially in healthcare professionals, can be reflected in emergent perceptual category (EPC) parameters. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this led to an increase in mask-induced acneiform eruptions, commonly referred to as "maskne.
