Article Abstract

Mercury (Hg) is an element with high toxicity, especially to the nervous system, and fluorescent pigments are used to visualize dynamic processes in living cells. A little explored fluorescent core is chalcone. Herein, we synthesized chalcone (2E)-3-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-one (8) and assessed its photophysical properties. Moreover, the application of this chemosensor in aqueous media shows a selective fluorescence quenching effect with Hg(II). The figures of merit for the chemosensor were calculated to be LOD = 136 nM and LOQ = 454 nM, as well as a stoichiometry of 1:1. Furthermore, the association constant (K) and fluorescence quenching constant (K) were calculated using the Benesi-Hildebrand and Stern-Volmer equations to be K= 9.08 × 10 and K= 1.60 × 10, respectively. Finally, by using a computational approach, we explain the interaction between chalcone (8) and Hg(II) and propose a potential quenching mechanism based on the blocking of photoinduced electron transfer.

A highly sensitive, selective, and simple method for detecting uranyl ions (UO) is crucial for human health and environmental safety. Amidoxime-based nanomaterials have been widely employed for UO detection, but their higher affinity for vanadium than UO limits their practical applications. Herein, a novel covalent organic polymer fluorescent probe (TT-COP) for UO detection was innovatively developed by a one-step Schiff-base condensation reaction between 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp).

Considering the potential risks of ferulic acid (FA), this study developed a novel fluorescent probe based on Zn-MOF for the efficient detection of FA in food. The Zn-MOF was successfully synthesized by solvothermal method, and its structure and stability were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). It exhibited strong fluorescence at 420 nm under 348 nm excitation, and maintained 92.

Photophysical studies on the interaction of small molecules with various forms of nucleic acids are attracting attention nowadays in order to delineate the molecular level mechanism of various biological processes occurring in vivo. Herein, we employed vivid steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques to elucidate the detailed characterization of the binding interaction of a biologically active cationic dye thioflavin T (ThT) with double and triple helical forms of RNA - A.U duplex and U.

Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the crucial biological signaling molecules, yet achieving its selective and spatiotemporal detection in in-situ/invitro or biological systems at specific pH remains a significant challenge. Hence, a probe capable of directly detecting NO would be immensely valuable in understanding its reactivity and biological functions. Here, to develop a Cu(II)-based probe for selective NO detection, we synthesized a Cu(II)-complex (1) using a N3-tridentate ligand having a pendant dansyl fluorophore (L) and evaluated it's NO reactivity under varying pH conditions.

In recent years, interactions between polysaccharides and proteins have been widely considered for use to improve protein gel performances. We previously found carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) can increase Pleurotus eryngii protein (PEP) gel properties, but the contributions of different key PEP fractions to overall gel formation remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate how CMCS affects the gel properties of PEP via intermolecular interactions with PEP fractions, including PEP1-1, PEP2-2, and PEP5-1.
