In this study, practically useful colorless polyimides (PIs) with low coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) and other desirable properties were prepared from hydrogenated pyromellitic dianhydride (1-,2-,4-,5--cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride, H-PMDA). A modified one-pot polymerization method afforded a high-molecular-weight PI with sufficient film-forming ability from 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB) with a rod-like structure and H-PMDA. However, the PI film cast from its homogeneous solution did not have low CTEs, similar to the analogous system using -tolidine. To solve this problem, a series of amide- and amide-imide-containing diamines were designed and synthesized. The modified one-pot polymerization of H-PMDA and the diamines in -butyrolactone produced homogeneous, viscous, and stable solutions of high-molecular-weight PIs with high solid contents. The cast films of certain systems examined in this study simultaneously achieved low CTEs, high optical transparency, considerably high glass transition temperatures (s), and sufficient ductility. A possible mechanism for the generation of low CTEs, which is closely related to the spontaneous in-plane orientation behavior during solution casting, was proposed. Certain H-PMDA-based PIs developed in this study are promising colorless heat-resistant plastic substrates for use in image display devices and other optical applications.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a major public health issue, significantly affecting the health and well-being of women and children. Research indicates a strong link between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and increased PPD rates. While the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACE-Q) is widely used for ACE screening, the Childhood Traumatic Events Scale (CTES) may better capture trauma items not covered by the ACE-Q, along with the timing and severity of ACEs.

Silicon carbide (SiC) exhibits intriguing thermo-physical properties such as higher heat capacity and conductivity, as well as a lower density than Ti6Al4V(ELI). These properties make SiC a good candidate for the reinforcement of Ti6Al4V(ELI) with respect to its use as a heat shield in aero turbines to increase their efficiency. The traditional materials used in aircraft structures were required to have a combination of good mechanical properties such as strength, stiffness, and hardness and low weight, as well as low thermo-physical properties such as coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity.

This study explores the influence of ZrN reinforcement on the microstructure and mechanical properties of AlSi10Mg metal-matrix composites. Utilizing high-energy ball milling (HEBM) and spark-plasma sintering (SPS), ZrN/AlSi10Mg composites were synthesized, achieving nearly full density with uniform ZrN distribution, while phase and chemical transformations were not observed in the bulk composites.

The noticeable difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coatings and copper substrates is a major challenge for thermal debonding of the copper-clad laminate (CCL) in high-frequency communications. Theoretically, ceramic fillers with low CTEs in the coating can effectively reduce the gap, and there remains a trade-off between the dispersibility of fillers and the interfacial interactions with the polymeric matrix. Here, we propose a novel approach to prepare a pentafluorobenzoyl chloride (PFBC)-modified polydopamine (PDA) shell on silica particles by using amidation.

We characterize the low-lying excited electronic states of a series of bis-phenanthrenes using our newly developed diabatic scheme called the fragment particle-hole density (FPHD) method and calculate both the electronic absorption and circular dichroism (ECD) spectra using the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and the FPHD-based exciton model which couples intrachromophore local excitations (LEs) and the interchromophore charge-transfer excitations (CTEs). TDDFT treats each bis-phenanthrene as a single molecule while the mixed LE-CTE exciton model partitions the molecule into two phenanthrene-based aromatic moieties, and then applies the electronic coupling between the various quasi-diabatic states to cover the interactions. It is found that TDDFT and the mixed LE-CTE model reproduce all experimentally observed trends in the spectral profiles, and the hybridization between LE and CTE states is displayed differently in absorption and ECD spectral intensities, as it usually decreases the absorption maxima and affects the positive/negative extrema of the ECD irregularly.
