In the United States, pediatric asthma is distributed geographically across lines of racialized segregation. We draw on emplacement, or the theory that embodied experiences and the material world are mutually informed, to situate such geographic trends within the narratives of 41 caregivers of children with asthma. Results suggest that caregivers identified and managed asthma-related risk with regard to the relational and structural conditions of three categories of locations: (1) houses, (2) neighborhoods, and (3) schools and other childhood institutions. Within each type of location, caregivers used emplaced knowledge and emplaced caregiving tactics to respond to asthma-related risk. Based on our findings, we identify critical intervention topics that are consistent with families' everyday lived experiences of place.

Studying the association between mixtures of environmental exposures and health outcomes can be challenging due to issues such as correlation among the exposures and non-linearities or interactions in the exposure-response function. For this reason, one common strategy is to fit flexible nonparametric models to capture the true exposure-response surface. However, once such a model is fit, further decisions are required when it comes to summarizing the marginal and joint effects of the mixture on the outcome.

Objectives: Incorporating social determinants of health to identify distinct pediatric asthma patient groups can help stratify populations by their risk of adverse events, improving targeted outreach and care.
Methods: Insurance claims and enrollment data from the Arkansas All-Payer Claims Database identified 22 169 children aged 5-18 years with an asthma diagnosis in 2018 and continuous Medicaid enrollment in 2018 and 2019. The clustering approach used information on comorbid conditions, asthma controller medication intensity, total controller and reliever medications filled, zip code-level Child Opportunity Index, and rural-urban classification.
