Article Abstract

A sharpened control over the parameters affecting the synthesis of plasmonic nanostructures is often crucial for their application in biosensing, which, if based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), requires well-defined optical properties of the substrate. In this work, a method for the microfluidic synthesis of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) on porous silicon (pSi) was developed, focusing on achieving a fine control over the morphological characteristics and spatial distribution of the produced nanostructures to be used as SERS substrates. To this end, a pSi membrane was integrated in a microfluidic chamber in which the silver precursor solution was injected, allowing for the real-time monitoring of the reaction by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The synthesis parameters, such as the concentration of the silver precursor, the temperature, and the flow rate, were varied in order to study their effects on the final silver NPs' morphology. Variations in the flow rate affected the size distribution of the NPs, whereas both the temperature and the concentration of the silver precursor strongly influenced the rate of the reaction and the particle size. Consistently with the described trends, SERS tests using 4-MBA as a probe showed how the flow rate variation affected the SERS enhancement uniformity, and how the production of larger NPs, as a result of an increase in temperature or of the concentration of the Ag precursor, led to an increased SERS efficiency.

Fluorescent N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) metal complexes are useful for various chemical and biological applications. In this study, we developed a simple strategy to synthesize BODIPY-linked NHC metal complexes involving Ag, Cu, Ni, and Pd. The synthesis began with the preparation of BODIPY-imidazolium salt as a precursor ligand.

The characteristics of gel texture, water holding properties, volatile and non-volatile flavor compounds and flavor precursors were investigated to reveal the effect of the "heating-low temperature storage-reheating" procedure on the sensory properties of silver carp surimi gel. The results on textural and water holding properties demonstrated that the cold storage treatment preserved the structural stability of the surimi gels. However, freeze-thaw cycles resulted in a decrease in breaking force, hardness, and water holding capacity.

Herein, we report an efficient and general one-pot multicomponent strategy, innovatively developed for the construction of δ,γ-unsaturated β-hydroxy nitrile scaffolds. Using readily available aldehydes and ketones as starting materials and TMSCFBr as a difluorocarbene precursor, the transformation proceeds via tandem Aldol condensation, a difluorocarbene electrophilic reaction, and hydrolysis. Mechanistic studies revealed that the difluorocarbene activates the oxygen atom of the α,β-unsaturated carbonyl group through electrophilic orientation, significantly enhancing the electrophilicity of the carbonyl carbon, thereby driving the reaction to proceed with high selectivity via a 1,2-addition pathway.

Chitosan is a natural biopolymer with intrinsic antimicrobial properties and strong metal ion chelating properties, making it an ideal matrix for the development of bioactive composites. In this study, silver and copper nanoparticles were synthesized using laser ablation in liquid (LAL) by the ablation of metallic targets into commercial chitosan (Cs) and chitosan produced from pupal exuviae (CsE) solutions, avoiding the use of chemical precursors or stabilizing agents. The nanocomposites obtained were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, TEM microscopy and FTIR spectroscopy in order to evaluate the size of the nanoparticles and the interactions between the polymer and metal nanoparticles.

Alumina supported silver (Ag/AlO) is considered as a promising catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with hydrocarbons (HC-SCR). However, its practical implementation remains limited by insufficient catalytic performance. Herein, we present a novel strategy to fabricate a highly efficient Ag/TiO/AlO catalyst utilizing a functional TiO-modified AlOOH precursor.
