Crop plant architecture is an important agronomic trait that contributes greatly to crop yield. Tiller angle is one of the most critical components that determine crop plant architecture, which in turn substantially affects grain yield mainly owing to its large influence on plant density. Gravity is a fundamental physical force that acts on all organisms on earth. Plant organs sense gravity to control their growth orientation, including tiller angle in rice (Oryza sativa). This review summarizes recent research advances made using rice tiller angle as a research model, providing insights into domestication of rice tiller angle, genetic regulation of rice tiller angle, and shoot gravitropism. Finally, we propose that current discoveries in rice can shed light on shoot gravitropism and improvement of plant tiller/branch angle in other species, thereby contributing to agricultural production in the future.

Weeds are one of the major constraints for wheat productivity, causing significant yield losses worldwide. While chemical control is the most used practice to overcome weed damage, its efficacy is challenged by increasing weed resistance to most used herbicides, which is an expanding phenomenon caused by herbicide overuse/misuse. Modern wheat varieties are less able to perceive the presence of weeds than old varieties and are therefore less competitive against them and require chemical control to ensure adequate yields.

Population characteristics serve as crucial determinants of rice yield. Investigating the population characteristics of indica-japonica hybrid rice across different yield levels can offer a solid theoretical foundation and robust scientific evidence for enhancing high-yield cultivation and breeding efficiency. This study conducted a two-year field experiment on four indica-japonica hybrid rice varieties with three planting densities.

TOPLESS (TPL) and TOPLESS-Related (TPR) corepressors are key regulatory proteins that interact with a variety of transcription factors to form specific complexes, thereby modulating a wide range of signaling pathways and metabolic processes. This study explored the function of the rice TPR gene OsTPR1. Transgenic rice lines overexpressing OsTPR1 (OsTPR1-Ox) exhibited reduced lateral root density, whereas OsTPR1 RNA interference lines (OsTPR1-Ri) showed increased lateral root density.

Tiller angle is a key agronomic trait that influences plant architecture and thus grain yield by optimizing rice planting density. Although great progress has been made in understanding the LAZY1-dependent pathway mediating rice tiller angle, the genetic regulatory network of rice tiller angle remains to be elucidated. Here, we identified a new tiller angle gene LAZY5 (LA5) that encodes a member of the ATP binding cassette transporter G subfamily (ABCG) transporter.

Tiller angle is a major component of rice plant architecture and affects planting density, photosynthetic efficiency, and ventilation. An extremely narrow or wide tiller angle adversely affects rice yield. Thus, a suitable tiller angle is considered a major factor to achieve ideal plant architecture in rice.
