The consumption of cultured crustaceans has been steadily increasing, and Pacific whiteleg shrimp () are major cultivated invertebrates worldwide. However, shrimp productivity faces a variety of challenges, mainly related to outbreaks of lethal or growth retardation-related diseases. In particular, hepatopancreatic microsporidiosis caused by the microsporidian parasite (EHP) is an important disease associated with growth retardation in shrimp. Here, we report the detection of EHP through histopathological, molecular and electron microscopy methods in the hepatopancreas of Pacific whiteleg shrimp with growth disorder in a South Korean farm. Phylogenetic analysis showed a clade distinct from the previously reported EHP strains isolated in Thailand, India, China and Vietnam. An EHP infection was not associated with inflammatory responses such as hemocyte infiltration. Although EHP infection has been reported worldwide, this is the first report in the shrimp aquaculture in Korea. Therefore, an EHP infection should be managed and monitored regularly for effective disease control and prevention.

Intracellular recognition of viral nucleic acids by NLRs and subsequent activation of antiviral immunity are crucial for host defense against virus infection in vertebrates. However, understanding on these processes is very limited in invertebrates, especially for crustaceans. In the present study, an NLR gene belonging to the NLRC subfamily (LvNLRC) was identified in the Pacific whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and its functions in intracellular recognition to DNA virus and antiviral immunity during WSSV infection were elucidated.

This study aims to identify and analyze the temporal variation in the activity and relative abundance of peptidases in the midgut gland of the Pacific whiteleg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, during digestion. The dynamic profiles of active peptidases throughout digestion were determined by zymogram profile analysis in the midgut gland of shrimp at different feeding times: preprandial, 1 h, and 3 h postprandial. Further proteomic analysis of midgut gland extracts confirmed the identity of different-class peptidases, as well as additional isoforms not previously reported, and changes in their relative abundance.
