Background Accidental ingestion of coin-shaped lithium batteries (CSLBs) poses a serious health risk, leading to severe esophageal injuries and fatal complications. Conventional CSLBs cause rapid tissue damage due to electrochemical reactions, necessitating the development of safer battery designs. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an improved CSLB with a titanium-clad design to reduce electrochemical reactions and delay esophageal tissue damage in cases of accidental ingestion.

Esophageal pericardial fistula is a rare complication of esophageal cancer. This article reports the first documented case of an esophageal pericardial fistula following radiotherapy in the presence of an esophageal stent. A 62-year-old man with advanced esophageal and cardiac cancer underwent radiotherapy after esophageal stent placement and subsequently developed an esophageal pericardial fistula.

New medical technology and techniques provide opportunities for better, faster care for patients with esophageal diseases, spanning robotics and minimally invasive techniques, artificial intelligence, medical devices, and digital health that are changing how to diagnose and manage patients with both benign and malignant esophageal diseases. We conducted a concise narrative review of recent advances in esophagology from the perspectives of innovators and physicians alike, with an emphasis on ensuring the environment around successful innovation over the next decade. To our knowledge, this is the first innovation-oriented review centered on the clinical field of esophagology, focusing on applicable content and knowledge gaps across the several individual domains covered in this review.

Current screening methods for Barrett esophagus (BE), the precursor to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC), are inadequate with less than one-third of screen-eligible patients currently undergoing screening. In addition to low screening rates, key issues include overemphasis on gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms and lack of provider awareness, owing in part to heterogeneous guidelines. To address these challenges, several new approaches are being explored: swallowable cell collection devices, exhaled volatile organic compounds analysis, blood-based molecular biomarkers, microbiome analysis, and alternative visualization methods such as transnasal and capsule endos-copy.
