Article Abstract

Lichens are good biomonitors for air pollution because of their high enrichment capability of atmospheric chemical elements. To monitor atmospheric element deposition using lichens, it is important to obtain information on the multi-element concentrations in lichen thalli. Because of serious air pollution, elemental concentrations in thalli of lichens from North China (especially Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Shanxi and Henan province) are often higher than those from other regions, therefore highlighting the necessity to optimize ICP-AES/MS (Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy/mass spectrometry) for analyzing lichen element content. Based on the high elemental concentrations in the lichen samples, and the differences in the sensitivity and detection limits between ICP-MS and ICP-AES, we propose a protocol for analyzing 31 elements in lichens using ICP-AES/MS. Twenty-two elements (Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, K, La, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sc, Sm, Sr, Tb, Th, Tl, V and Zn) can be identified by using microwave digestion- ICP-MS, and 9 elements (Al, Ba, Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, P, S and Ti) by using ashing-alkali fusion digestion- ICP-AES.

Schiff bases containing sulfonyl units are important compounds because of their potential biological properties in the therapeutical field. In this study, three novel ligands (L1, L2, and L3) containing the sulfonyl groups, a derivative of Schiff base, were synthesized, and their molecular structures were characterized by FT-IR, H-NMR, C NMR, and elemental analysis results. The antiproliferative activities of these Schiff base ligands were evaluated against human colon cancer (HT-29 and Caco-2) and mouse fibroblast (L929) cells by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method.

In this study, a novel hybrid hydrogel incorporating a scandium-based metal-organic framework (scandium-integrated MOF-hydrogel hybrid) was developed using scandium nitrate, 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, oxidized pectin, and chitosan. The synthesized scandium-integrated MOF-hydrogel hybrid demonstrated remarkable dual-functionality in both the adsorption of hazardous dye pollutants and the inhibition of pathogenic bacteria commonly found in wastewater. Characterization of the scandium-integrated MOF-hydrogel hybrid was performed using FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDAX, CHNO elemental, BET, and XPS analyses, confirming successful MOF integration and a porous, reactive surface.

The distribution of groundwater uranium in Chintamani village, Karnataka, India.

Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Life and Allied Health Sciences, M.S. Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Bengaluru, Karnataka, 560054, India.

Background: Chintamani village, Chikkaballapura district, Karnataka, India was found to possess high aquifer uranium concentrations. Geologically, Chintamani village is located on bedrock that is rich in elements like potassium (K) that naturally contain high levels of radioactive elements, such as uranium and thorium, due to the presence of alkali-feldspar granites and gneisses. Aquifer depletion has caused the concentration of these elements in groundwater to increase over time, posing a potential health hazard to the residents of Chintamani village.

Objectives: This study focused on synthesizing and characterizing novel thiosemicarbazide derivatives containing a 1,2,4-triazole moiety and evaluating their antimicrobial activity against several bacterial strains. The research aimed to identify key structural features that enhance antimicrobial efficacy through structure-activity relationship analysis and identify the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the most potent compounds to assess their potential for further development as antimicrobial agents.

Materials And Methods: Nine novel thiosemicarbazide derivatives containing a 1,2,4-triazole moiety were synthesized by reacting 1,2,4-triazole derivatives with thiosemicarbazide precursors, and the products were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR), carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (C-NMR) spectroscopy, and elemental analysis.

Effects of short-term changes in ambient carbon monoxide on sickle cell disease hospital encounters.

Environ Pollut

September 2025

Division of Epidemiology, Department of Public Health Sciences, Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, PA, USA. Electronic address:

Symptoms of sickle cell disease (SCD) may be worsened by environmental factors. Although outdoor air pollution has been proposed as a potential trigger, the specific role of carbon monoxide (CO) among traffic-related pollutants, remains understudied in those with SCD. Based on South Carolina hospital encounter records (2002-2019) for SCD patients, we estimated daily 8-hour maximum outdoor CO concentrations at patients' residential zip codes using a newly-developed spatio-temporal model.
