Quantitative MRI allows to probe tissue properties by measuring relaxation times and may thus detect subtle changes in tissue composition. In this work we analyzed different relaxation times (T1, T2, T2* and T2') and histological features in 321 samples that were acquired from 25 patients with newly diagnosed wild-type glioma. Quantitative relaxation times before intravenous application of gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA), T1 relaxation time after GBCA as well as the relative difference between T1 relaxation times pre-to-post GBCA (T1rel) were compared with histopathologic features such as the presence of tumor cells, cell and vessel density, endogenous markers for hypoxia and cell proliferation. Image-guided stereotactic biopsy allowed for the attribution of each tissue specimen to its corresponding position in the respective relaxation time map. Compared to normal tissue, T1 and T2 relaxation times and T1rel were prolonged in samples containing tumor cells. The presence of vascular proliferates was associated with higher T1rel values. Immunopositivity for lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) involved slightly longer T1 relaxation times. However, low T2' values, suggesting high amounts of deoxyhemoglobin, were found in samples with elevated vessel densities, but not in samples with increased immunopositivity for LDHA. Taken together, some of our observations were consistent with previous findings but the correlation of quantitative MRI and histologic parameters did not confirm all our pathophysiology-based assumptions.

Tamsulosin is a highly selective α1A adrenergic receptor antagonist that can relax smooth muscles in the urethra, bladder neck, and prostate and improve urinary disorders. It is therefore widely used to treat lower urinary tract symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. The aim of this study is to evaluate the pharmacokinetic (PK) characteristics and bioequivalence of 2 different formulations (tamsulosin sustained-release tablets and tamsulosin sustained-release capsules) in healthy Chinese subjects.

Introducing dynamic covalent chemistries into polymer networks allows access to complex linear viscoelasticity, owing to the reversible nature of the dynamic bonds. While this macroscopic mechanical behavior is influenced by the dynamic exchange of these chemistries, connecting the microscopic dynamics to the bulk properties is hindered by the time scale conventional techniques can observe. Here, light scattering passive microrheology is applied to probe short-time dynamics of dynamic covalent networks that consist of telechelic benzalcyanoacetate (BCA) Michael acceptors and thiol-functionalized cross-linkers.

Background: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are safe and effective long-acting reversible contraceptive therapies that are also used as minimally invasive treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding, endometrial hyperplasia, and early-stage endometrial cancer. Despite many advantages, IUDs are underused predominantly due to patient discomfort. Although many techniques have been explored previously in the literature, there is currently little consensus on effective analgesic strategies.

Purpose: Gadoxetic acid-enhanced hepatobiliary phase T-weighted (Tw) MRI is effective for the detection of focal liver lesions but lacks sufficient T contrast to distinguish benign from malignant lesions. Although the addition of T, diffusion, and dynamic contrast-enhanced Tw imaging improves lesion characterization, these methods often do not provide adequate spatial resolution to identify subcentimeter lesions. This work proposes a high-resolution, volumetric, free-breathing liver MRI method that produces colocalized fat-suppressed, variable Tw images from a single acquisition, thereby improving both lesion detection and characterization.

Monitoring skeletal muscle contraction provides valuable information about the muscle mechanical properties, which can be helpful in various biomedical applications. This chapter presents a single-element flexible and wearable ultrasonic sensor (WUS) developed by our research group and its application for continuously monitoring and characterizing skeletal muscle contraction. The WUS is made from a 110-µm thick polyvinylidene fluoride piezoelectric polymer film.
