This article reviews early studies that have demonstrated the ability of low intensity ultrasound waves to modulate brain activity. It also reviews the technological developments that have enabled transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) to achieve millimetric spatial accuracy. This allows precise, noninvasive and reversible brain stimulation, a unique capability when compared to existing techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct-current stimulation, and deep brain stimulation with implanted electrodes.

Understanding the neural mechanisms that underlie behavior change is critical for improving lifestyle management in type 2 diabetes. Individuals with type 2 diabetes face unique challenges in adopting and maintaining healthy behaviors, which can be influenced by alterations in brain function and plasticity, potentially leading to cognitive impairment. Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs aim to enhance lifestyle changes and promote better health outcomes while reducing cognitive decline.

Stimuli that potentially require a rapid defensive or avoidance action can appear from the periphery at any time in natural environments. de Wit et al. ( 127: 120-130, 2020) recently reported novel evidence suggestive of a fundamental neural mechanism that allows organisms to effectively deal with such situations.
