Purpose: Herpes zoster poses severe complications in elderly immunocompromised patients, particularly those with altered drug metabolism and renal impairment, impacting quality of life.

Patients And Methods: To evaluate brivudine's efficacy and safety in such cases, we conducted a retrospective case series at Shanghai Skin Disease Hospital, analyzing four Chinese patients (aged 64-84 years) with complex herpes zoster, including systemic lupus erythematosus, diabetes nephropathy, multiple comorbidities, and trigeminal nerve involvement. Selected for their immunocompromised status and prior antiviral failure or renal concerns, patients received oral brivudine (125 mg once daily) with or without intravenous acyclovir, with outcomes assessed via clinical examination, pain scores, and laboratory monitoring over 7-14 days.

Comparison of the Anxiolytic and Analgesic Effects of Gabapentin and Pregabalin in Cats: A Systematic Review.

Animals (Basel)

August 2025

Clinical Pharmacology and Veterinary Anesthesia, Biological Sciences Department, Facultad de Estudios Superiores Cuautitlán, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Cuautitlán 54714, Mexico.

The present study aimed to systematically review the anxiolytic and analgesic effects of gabapentin and pregabalin in domestic cats to assess the quality of using these medications for stress, fear, and anxiety management, and the treatment of both acute and chronic pain. The search was carried out between March and May 2025 using four databases: PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The keywords used were the combination of "pregabalin," "gabapentin," "analgesia," "anxiety," "stress", and "cats".

Analytical determination of pregabalin presents unique challenges due to its aliphatic structure and absence of chromophoric groups, despite its classification as a BCS Class I drug with high solubility and permeability. This comprehensive review critically evaluates and compares the diverse analytical methodologies developed over the past two decades for pregabalin quantification in pharmaceutical formulations and biological matrices. We systematically analyze titrimetric, spectroscopic (UV-Vis, fluorescence, and infrared), electrochemical, chromatographic (HPTLC, HPLC, GC), and mass spectrometric techniques, with particular emphasis on derivatization strategies that overcome pregabalin's inherent detection limitations.

Introduction: Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disorder characterized by involuntary rhythmic oscillations. Emerging evidence suggests that gabapentinoids, including gabapentin and pregabalin, may be effective in managing ET. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of gabapentinoids in treating ET by analyzing data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Pharmacological impact on sleep architecture and polysomnographic measures in Restless Legs Syndrome: A systematic review.

Sleep Med Rev

October 2025

Clinical Neurophysiology Research Unit and Sleep Research Centre, Department of Neurology, Oasi Research Institute - IRCCS, Troina, Italy. Electronic address:

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder with diverse clinical manifestations that significantly impact sleep and quality of life, particularly among women. Polysomnography (PSG) plays a key role in evaluating motor features of RLS, such as periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS). This review examines the effects of pharmacological treatments on PSG parameters and sleep architecture in RLS.
