The risk of overwhelming hospitals from multiple waves of COVID-19 is yet to be quantified. Here, we investigate the impact of different scenarios of releasing strong measures implemented around the U.S. on COVID-19 hospitalized cases and the risk of overwhelming the hospitals while considering resources at the county level. We show that multiple waves might cause an unprecedented impact on the hospitals if an increasing number of the population becomes susceptible and/or if the various protective measures are discontinued. Furthermore, we explore the ability of different mitigation strategies in providing considerable relief to hospitals. The results can help planners, policymakers, and state officials decide on additional resources required and when to return to normalcy.

Soliton propagation of laser radiation in various nonlinear media is of great importance because of its numerous applications. Active periodic structures with parity-time symmetry provide the possibility for the solitons generation due to the balance of energy gain and loss. In the present paper, we derive an approximate analytical soliton solution to a model of two-color laser radiation propagation in an active periodic structure.

Despite growing recognition of health as a multidimensional construct, few studies have examined how physical, psychological, and behavioral health dimensions coalesce and evolve across the transition from young to middle adulthood, especially within the context of life-course adversities. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are increasingly recognized as determinants of long-term health and development, yet their effects on employment outcomes in adulthood remain understudied. This study examines the association between ACEs during adolescence and two employment outcomes in adulthood: unemployment status and precarious employment. Based on a life course framework, we also explored five potential mediators: educational attainment, locus of control, incarceration, depressive symptoms, and self-rated health.

Zooplankton are sensitive indicators of environmental changes and crucial components of marine food webs, facilitating energy transfer between primary producers and higher trophic levels. This study used ZooScan image analysis to investigate variations in zooplankton abundance and biovolume in Shandong coastal waters during spring (May 2022), summer (August 2022), and winter (December 2022 and February 2023). Functional indices such as taxonomic diversity, the normalized biomass size spectrum (NBSS), size diversity, and mean body size were calculated to describe the seasonal dynamics of energy transfer efficiency in zooplankton.
