Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma impact on work productivity, but their population-based burden and clinical predictors are understudied. In this observational, real-life study, work absence of 14,383 asthma and/or COPD patients present in the MAJORICA cohort (Spain) was compared with the general population. Using multivariable regression, we studied the association of work absence with demographic and clinical characteristics. Patients with asthma and/or COPD had more work absence than the general population (15.2% vs 8.9%, p < 0.0001). Patients with asthma had more often periods of work absence compared to patients with COPD (16.0% vs 12.8%, p < 0.0001). The number of days absent were, however, less in asthma than in COPD (median: 15 days [IQR: 5-51] vs 39 days [IQR: 13-134], p < 0.001). Patients with asthma-COPD overlap were in between (14.5% with absence; median: 27 days [IQR: 10-82]). Comorbid anxiety, allergic rhinitis, and sleep apnoea were independently associated with more work absence.

BackgroundAt present, nonvirtual neurovascular training can be performed using either an angiographic suite under fluoroscopic guidance (entailing radiation exposure) or direct optical visualization with a camera-based system. The angiographic approach offers high-fidelity visualization and catheter control but is constrained by the limited availability of such specialized facilities, whereas the camera-based approach can be implemented virtually anywhere yet lacks comparable realism in key procedural aspects. The objective of this work is to develop and evaluate a novel camera-based angiography training system (CBATS) that generates artificial angiograms and roadmaps, thereby combining the advantages of both imaging techniques while eliminating radiation exposure.

Advances in molecular analysis and characterization techniques should revolutionize the methods for scientific exploration across physics, chemistry, and biology, fundamentally overturning our understanding of interactions and processes that govern molecular behavior at the microscopic level. Currently, the absence of a molecular analysis method that can both quantify molecules and achieve single-molecule spatial resolution hinders our study of complex molecular systems in sorption and catalysis. Here, we propose a quantitative analysis strategy for small molecules confined in ZSM-5, a zeolite material extensively used in catalysis and gas separation, based on low-dose transmission electron microscopy.

is a commensal bacterium that colonizes the gut of humans and animals and is a major opportunistic pathogen, known for causing multidrug-resistant healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Its ability to thrive in diverse environments and disseminate antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) across ecological niches highlights the importance of understanding its ecological, evolutionary, and epidemiological dynamics. The CRISPR2 locus has been used as a valuable marker for assessing clonality and phylogenetic relationships in .

Recently, joint replacement surgery is facing significant challenges of patient dissatisfaction and the need for revision procedures. In-situ monitoring of stress stability at the site of artificial joint replacement during postoperative evaluation is important. Mechanoluminescence (ML), a novel "force to light" conversion technology, may be used to monitor such bio-stress within tissues.

Normal tension glaucoma (NTG) is a predominant subset of glaucoma in Asia and is characterized by glaucomatous optic neuropathy in the absence of elevated intraocular pressure. Alterations in retinal blood vessels are reported to be important mechanisms of glaucomatous optic nerve damage. Retinal peripapillary vascular density is assessed in patients with early stage NTG and OPTN (E50K) mutant mice and confirmed a similar reduction in retinal peripapillary vascular density in patients with NTG and model mice.
