Article Abstract

Psychological stress is deeply involved in the pathophysiology of not only mental illness but also functional gastrointestinal disorders. In the present study, we examined the relationship between psychological stress and abnormality of stool properties, focusing on the alteration of plasma glucocorticoid and guanylin (GN)/uroguanylin (UGN) expression in the colon. A murine model of chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) was established by exposing a C57BL/6N intruder mouse to a CD-1 aggressor mouse for 3-5 min. Thereafter the mice were kept in the same cage but separated by a divider for the remainder of the day. This procedure was repeated for 10 consecutive days, and then a social interaction test was performed to evaluate social avoidance. Fresh fecal and blood samples were collected for stool property analysis and measurement of the plasma glucocorticoid level by ELISA. The expression of GN, UGN, and guanylate cyclase 2C in the colonic tissues was examined by real-time RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry. Moreover, Lovo cells were stimulated with dexamethasone, and the expression of / mRNA was examined. In the CSDS group, the time spent in the social interaction zone was significantly shorter when the CD-1 aggressor mouse was present than when it was absent. The social interaction ratio was also significantly lower in the CSDS group relative to the controls. The mean Bristol scale score was significantly lower in the CSDS group, but the fecal sodium concentration did not differ between CSDS mice and controls. The level of plasma corticosterone was significantly higher in the CSDS group than in the controls immediately after the 10th day of CSDS. The expression of both and was significantly decreased in the CSDS mice. GN was expressed in all colonic epithelial cells, and UGN was expressed in ovoid or pyramidal epithelial cells in the colonic mucosa. The expression of both and was significantly decreased in the CSDS mice relative to controls. The expression of both GN and UGN was significantly suppressed in Lovo cells upon stimulation with dexamethasone. Psychological stress-induced glucocorticoid may suppress colonic GN/UGN expression, resulting in a change in stool properties leading to constipation.

Introduction: Residents frequently conduct code status discussions (CSDs) with patients, but many report not receiving formal training in this skill. While institutions have attempted to address this, there remains a need for a curriculum that uses standardized patients (SPs), is generalizable to students interested in different medical specialties, and has been tested on a large sample of students.

Methods: We trained 192 fourth-year medical students across four different campuses in how to conduct CSDs during one 2-hour workshop as part of their Transition to Residency course in April 2024.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs in individuals who have experienced a traumatic event; however, not everyone who has experienced a traumatic event will develop this condition, highlighting the significance of susceptibility factors. Social hierarchy is a critical behavioral regulator of stress susceptibility and a risk factor for mental disorders. Individual resilience, the ability to recover from acute stress and preclinical injury, also plays a role in PTSD susceptibility.

Background: Data measuring life expectancy (LE) and health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE) in Canada are available for large geographical areas, such as provinces, territories, and health regions. However, to date, no study has analyzed LE and HALE at the municipal level.

Data And Methods: Death and population counts from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2020, were retrieved for 1,227 census subdivisions (CSDs) in Canada.

Small-molecule CGRP antagonist atogepant does not affect cortical spreading depression susceptibility in rats.

Background: Atogepant is a small-molecule non-competitive calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist efficacious in preventing episodic migraine. Cortical spreading depolarization (CSD) is a slowly propagating depolarization wave underlying migraine aura. We investigated whether the efficacy of atogepant in migraine is mediated by CSD suppression.

Climate change has markedly increased adverse effects on human health and economic growth. However, few studies have differentiated the impacts of extreme temperatures at the city level and analysed the future implications for human health under various climate change scenarios. Here we leverage data on historical relationships among six kinds of climate-sensitive diseases (CSDs) and associated hospitalizations and temperatures across 301 cities (more than 90% of all cities) and more than 7,000 hospitals in China, and use a nonlinear distributed lag model.
