Article Abstract

Membrane contact sites between virtually any known organelle have been documented and, in the last decades, their study received momentum due to their importance for fundamental activities of the cell and for the subtle comprehension of many human diseases. The lack of tools to finely image inter-organelle proximity hindered our understanding on how these subcellular communication hubs mediate and regulate cell homeostasis. We develop an improved and expanded palette of split-GFP-based contact site sensors (SPLICS) for the detection of single and multiple organelle contact sites within a scalable distance range. We demonstrate their flexibility under physiological conditions and in living organisms.

Ethane dehydrogenation over CaCO-mediated tandem catalysts.

Nat Commun

August 2025

School of Chemical Engineering & Technology, Key Laboratory for Green Chemical Technology of Ministry of Education, Tianjin University, Tianjin, China.

CO-assisted oxidative dehydrogenation of light alkane is a promising and innovative technology for light olefin production; however, the interference of side reactions and sluggish reactivity of CO limit olefin yields. This paper describes an economically viable tandem catalytic system by coupling alkane dehydrogenation and the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction, employing PtSn/SiO as ethane dehydrogenation (EDH) sites and nano-CaCO as the hydrogen acceptor for sequent RWGS. This tandem catalytic system significantly surpasses commercial CrO- and Pt-based catalytic systems, and breaks the EDH thermodynamic equilibrium limitation, reaching 142% of the nominal equilibrium ethylene yield of non-oxidative EDH process with 96.

An orange fluorescent glutamate sensor for multicolor single-synapse imaging.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

September 2025

Department of Pharmacology, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, 113-0033, Japan. Electronic address:

High-resolution imaging of glutamate is essential for understanding synaptic transmission. While fluorescent sensors capable of detecting glutamate release with single-synapse resolution have been developed, these sensors are almost exclusively green-emitting. This spectral constraint hinders multicolor imaging experiments designed to investigate the interplay between glutamate dynamics and other cellular activities.

Optical see-through head-mounted displays (OHMDs) blend digital content with the physical world, presenting unique color management challenges. Previous literature suggests using green as the main color, but this severely limits creative freedom. To address this, we conducted an empirical study with 30 participants, evaluating 216 colors under various OHMD usage conditions.

Pupil cycle time (PCT) estimates the dynamics of a biofeedback loop established between pupil size and stimulus luminance, size or colour. The PCT is useful for probing the functional integrity of the retinopupillary circuits, and is therefore potentially applicable for assessing the effects of damage due to retinopathies or neuropathies. In previous studies, PCT was measured by manually counting the number of pupil oscillations during a fixed period to calculate the PCT.

Biphasic liquids with shape-shifting and bistable microdomains.

Nature

July 2025

Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA.

Liquids comprising two coexisting phases can form a range of stable and metastable states, including wetting films, droplets and threads. Processes that permit rapid and reversible transformations between these morphologies, however, have been difficult to realize because physical properties required for rapid shape change (for example, low interfacial tension or viscosity) provide pathways for relaxation that result in short-lived states. Fully reversible formation of long-lived microdomain states would expand the palette of properties that can be accessed dynamically using biphasic liquids (for example, tunable optical metamaterials).
