Previous studies have demonstrated that sludge hydrolysis and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production were improved through NaCl assistant anaerobic fermentation. However, the effect of NaCl concentrations on hydrolase activity and microbial community structure was rarely reported. In this study, it was found that α-glucosidase activity and some carbohydrate-degrading bacteria were inhibited in NaCl tests, owing to their vulnerability to high NaCl concentration. Correspondingly, the microbial community richness and diversity were reduced compared with the control test, while the evenness was not affected by NaCl concentration. By contrast, the protease activity was increased in the presence of NaCl and reached the highest activity at the NaCl concentration of 20 g/L. The protein-degrading and SCFAs-producing bacteria (e.g., and ) were enriched in the presence of NaCl, which were salt-tolerant.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a persistent organic pollutant with toxic effects on human health and ecosystems. In this study, the performance of MWCNT-OH functionalized with iron nanoparticles (MWCNT-OH@Fe) using sugarcane bagasse extract as a reducing agent (green synthesis) was evaluated for BPA adsorption. The kinetics are fast, between 10 and 20 min in the range of concentrations evaluated and the resistance to external film diffusion (external film mass transfer) identified as the rate-limiting step of the process.

Soil washing with surfactants is a promising technique for remediating petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soils. This study evaluates a biosurfactant extracted from Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), an abundant aquatic weed in Thailand, using ultrasound-assisted extraction for diesel-contaminated soil remediation. The biosurfactant extract (Extract WH) was characterized for its surface tension reduction, critical micelle concentration (CMC), emulsification capacity with diesel, and phytotoxicity.

Freezing point depression due to high salt concentration is crucial for liquid water to exist on cold worlds, expanding special regions where habitats are plausible. Alkaline pectinases are in demand in industrial processes that require the degradation of plant pectins at high pH, for example, removal of pectin stains from fabrics, cutlery, and porcelain; treatment of pectic wastewater; fermentation of coffee, tea, and cocoa; manufacture of poultry and animal feeds, and processing of textiles, and so forth. The present study aimed to (a) screen four alkaliphilic microbial isolates, previously obtained from samples collected around Lake Bogoria (soda lake), Baringo County, Kenya, for alkaline pectinases, and (b) characterize the pectinase-producers.
