Article Abstract

Rationale: The screening for illegal adulteration of glucocorticoids (GCs) in cosmetics is challenging due to the vast variety of potential GCs that are present to improve the declared effects. An effective analytical method to screen illegally added GCs in cosmetics is vital to protect consumers.

Methods: An ultra-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS/MS) method using precursor ion scanning (PIS) acquisition mode was developed to screen GCs in cosmetics. Forty-seven GCs were investigated to identify their common product ions formed by collision-induced dissociation. Cosmetic samples spiked with GCs were extracted using solid-phase extraction.

Results: Four common positive product ions, m/z 121, 135, 147, and 171, were selected for PIS analysis. Limits of detection (LODs) were established for all 47 GCs. The method was validated on spiked samples to ensure its effectiveness in terms of sensitivity and selectivity. Sixty samples were analyzed. Seven GCs were detected in six samples.

Conclusions: An effective screening method using UPLC/MS/MS with PIS acquisition mode was developed and successfully applied to screen for targeted and untargeted GCs in cosmetic samples.

Giant acrochordons, commonly referred to as skin tags, are benign, pedunculated lesions often linked to conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. While these lesions are generally harmless, they can lead to discomfort or cosmetic concerns, prompting individuals to seek treatment. Traditional methods, including excision and cryotherapy, are frequently employed but come with certain risks.

Article Synopsis
  • Rhinocerebral mucormycosis (RCM) can lead to severe facial deformities, and the proposed technique aims to use existing dentures as templates for reconstructive surgery and temporary prosthetics.
  • A study conducted with 30 patients undergoing microvascular fibular flap reconstruction showed successful results, with only one flap failure that was later salvaged successfully.
  • The method offers a promising option for both cosmetic and functional restoration in young, healthy patients, enhancing both hard and soft tissue reconstruction along with dental restoration.

Craniosynostosis (CS) is the premature fusion of skull sutures, with all sutures except the metopic suture typically fusing in adulthood. Premature fusion constrains brain growth, leading to abnormal skull shape and potential neurocognitive or neurological issues, along with syndromic features in some cases. While CS is rare, its occurrence in siblings is exceptionally uncommon and holds significant academic importance.

Background: Stanniocalcin-1 (STC1) may harbor anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties, thereby exerting neuroprotective effects. This study was done with the intent to determine the role of serum STC1 in severity assessment and prognosis prediction of severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI).

Methods: In this prospective longitudinal cohort study of 104 sTBI patients and 104 healthy individuals (controls), serum STC1 levels were quantified.

Purpose: To compare the effect of the ocular antiseptic treatments 0.05% chlorhexidine, 5% povidone-iodine (PI) and 5% betadine on cell viability and mucin secretion of primary cultured human goblet cells (GCs).

Method: GC viability was analysed using lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and tetrazolium dye (MTT) colorimetric assays.
