Article Abstract

Biological systems tailor their properties and behavior to their size throughout development and in numerous aspects of physiology. However, such size scaling remains poorly understood as it applies to cell mechanics and mechanosensing. By examining how the pupal dorsal thorax epithelium responds to morphogenetic forces, we found that the number of apical stress fibers (aSFs) anchored to adherens junctions scales with cell apical area to limit larger cell elongation under mechanical stress. aSFs cluster Hippo pathway components, thereby scaling Hippo signaling and proliferation with area. This scaling is promoted by tricellular junctions mediating an increase in aSF nucleation rate and lifetime in larger cells. Development, homeostasis, and repair entail epithelial cell size changes driven by mechanical forces; our work highlights how, in turn, mechanosensitivity scales with cell size.

Auxin, one of the earliest recognized and extensively investigated phytohormones, is crucial in plant growth and survival in adverse environmental conditions. Two gene families primarily regulate auxin signaling: auxin response factors (ARFs) and auxin/indole-3-acetic acid (Aux/IAA). Aux/IAA family proteins are recognized as essential elements of the nuclear auxin signaling system, inhibiting gene transcription in their presence and facilitating gene activation upon their degradation.

Objectives: Left ventricular vortex dynamics play a crucial role in cardiac function but are significantly altered by mitral valve diseases or surgical interventions. Such hemodynamic changes may lead to maladaptive intracardiac vortices, potentially triggering pathways associated with progressive left ventricular remodeling and thrombosis. This study assessed left ventricular hemodynamics under both physiological and pathological conditions using a biohybrid in vitro platform, aiming to analyze the impact of these conditions on cardiac function.

The construction of complex tissue shapes during embryonic development results from spatial patterns of gene expression and mechanical forces fueled by chemical energy from ATP hydrolysis. We find that chemical energy is similarly patterned during morphogenesis. Specifically, mitochondria are locally enriched at the apical sides of epithelial cells during apical constriction, which is widely used across the animal kingdom to fold epithelial tissues.

is a significant submerged macrophyte utilized in shrimp and crab aquaculture, yet it exhibits low thermotolerance. This study investigated the physiological responses and transcriptomic characteristics of under high-temperature stress (HTS). The results indicated that HTS significantly reduced the absolute growth rate (AGR) and photosynthetic efficiency of while concurrently elevating antioxidant enzyme activities, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and concentrations of osmotic adjustment compounds.
