Article Abstract

We report for the first time that the protonation behavior of weak polyelectrolyte brushes depends very strongly on ionic strength. The p changes by one pH step per order of magnitude in salt concentration. For low salt concentrations (∼1 mM), a very high pH is required to deprotonate a polyacidic brush and a very low pH is required to protonate a polybasic brush. This has major consequences for interactions with other macromolecules, as the brushes are actually almost fully neutral when believed to be charged. We propose that many previous studies on electrostatic interactions between polyelectrolytes and proteins have, in fact, looked at other types of intermolecular forces, in particular, hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds.

We study the microstructural properties and state of hydration of aqueous low-molecular-weight poly(,-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) solutions and their dependence on polymer concentration and pH by means of detailed atomistic Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and experiments. For infinitely dilute solutions with a degree of polymerization of = 30 at basic pH conditions, no temperature dependence is observed on the overall shape and state of hydration of the polyelectrolyte. This is supported by the experimental component of our work according to which the hydrodynamic radius, , does not change dramatically with temperature.

The self-consistent field Poisson-Boltzmann framework is applied for analysis of equilibrium partitioning of ampholytic protein-like nanocolloids between buffer solution and weak (pH-sensitive) versus strong polyelectrolyte (polyanionic) brushes with the same net charge per unit area. The position-dependent nanocolloid net charge and the insertion freeenergy profiles are derived as a function of pH and ionic strength in the solution. It is demonstrated that, similar to strong polyelectrolyte brushes, pH-sensitive brushes are capable of the uptake of nanocolloids in the vicinity of the isoelectric point, that is, when the net charge of the colloid in the buffer has either the opposite or the same sign as the ionized monomer units of the brush.

Modified TiO photocatalysts face challenges dependence on cocatalysts, weak interfacial interactions, and poor wettability. This work presents an effective strategy by coupling donor-donor (D-D) type cationic conjugated polyelectrolyte poly[(9,9-bis(3'-((N,N-dimethyl)-N-ethylammonium)-propyl)-2,7-fluorene)-alt-2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)]dibromide (PFN-Br) with two-dimensional TiO (2D-TiO₂) nanosheets to construct type-II heterojunctions rich in active sites. Under optimal conditions, the 2D-TiO/50 wt% PFN-Br (2D-Ti/PBr-50) heterojunction achieved a hydrogen evolution reaction of 2621.

Charge Regulation Effects in Weak Polyelectrolyte Complexation.

Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California 91125, United States.

We use coarse-grained simulations to study the impact of charge regulation on the complexation of a weak polyacid and a strong polycation. Comparing an isolated polyacid with the polyelectrolyte pair, we demonstrate that charge regulation leads to a significant enhancement of the ionization. Furthermore, our simulations unveil that the condensation of isolated chains into a tightly bound complex happens in a discontinuous, first-order like transition as the pH value is varied.

Polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) thin films, fabricated at nano-scale by Layer-by-Layer (LbL) self-assembly techniques, have diverse nanotechnology applications. Precise thickness measurement during layer buildup is crucial in controlling the thickness. In this work, we present a novel optical measurement technique for in-situ analysis of the PEM film build-up by utilizing Etched Fiber Bragg Gratings (EFBG)-based sensors to quantify the deposited thickness.
