Article Abstract

This study presents the most comprehensive set of ecosystem service provision estimates for diverse oyster-based resources to date. We use expert elicitation methods to derive estimates of five ecosystem services provided by oysters: oyster harvest (as indicated by oyster density), improved water quality (net nitrogen assimilation), shoreline protection (net erosion), and other fish habitat (blue crab and red drum density). Distributions are estimated for three distinct resources: on-bottom production, off-bottom farms, and non-harvested restoration/conservation efforts, under twelve distinct scenarios according to varying environmental conditions (eutrophication, sedimentation, and salinity regimes). Our expert-derived estimates of ecosystem services provide useful comparisons across oyster resources of both expected ecosystem service delivery levels and the amount of variation in those levels. These estimates bridge an information gap regarding relative performance of diverse oyster resources along multiple dimensions and should serve as a useful guide for resource managers facing competing interests.

Bivalve farming, a vital component of global aquaculture, has been proposed as a potential marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) strategy, yet its role remains contentious. Using field mesocosms, we demonstrate that oyster filter-feeding enhances mCDR by accelerating the formation of particulate and dissolved organic carbon in the water column and promoting organic carbon deposition in sediments. This process shifts the water column toward a more autotrophic and alkaline state, effectively sequestering CO from the atmosphere.

The distribution and sources of heavy metals in sediments near natural oyster habitats along the Guangdong coast were investigated from July 2022 to February 2023. Sediments were predominantly sandy (>55 % sand). Heavy metal concentrations followed the order: Zn > Pb > Cu > Cr > As > Cd > Hg.

Approximately 20-30% of cultivated oyster mushrooms () are classified as low grade due to morphological and visual imperfections or mechanical damage, representing significant waste in mushroom production systems. This review examines the structural and biochemical properties of , particularly focusing on cell wall components including chitin, β-glucans, and mannogalactans, which provide crucial rheological characteristics for 3D printing. The literature results demonstrate that these natural polysaccharides contribute essential viscosity, water-binding capacity, and mechanical stability required for printable edible inks.

Chromosomal-level genome assembly of an allotetraploid oyster.

Tetraploid oysters are used to cross with diploids to produce triploid oysters that have become an important part of the oyster aquaculture industry worldwide. Although most tetraploid oysters are artificially induced autotetraploids, allotetraploids can be produced between closely related species, providing new opportunities for polyploid breeding and studying genome interactions. Using PacBio sequencing, Illumina sequencing, and high-throughput chromosome conformation capture scaffolding, we produced a high-quality genome assembly of an artificially induced allotetraploid between the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata.

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) disposal presents significant environmental challenges in the edible fungi industry. Converting SMS into biochar offers a promising resource utilization approach; however, the original biochar properties limit its effectiveness in mushroom cultivation applications. In this study, SMS biochar was modified by phosphoric acid treatment to form acid-modified mushroom substrates (AMMS), and the influence of acid-modified mushroom substrates on the production of oyster mushroom was evaluated.
