Article Abstract

The plant hormone ethylene plays a pivotal role in virtually every aspect of plant development, including vegetative growth, fruit ripening, senescence, and abscission. Moreover, it acts as a primary defense signal during plant stress. Being a volatile, its immediate biosynthetic precursor, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid, ACC, is generally employed as a tool to provoke ethylene responses. However, several reports propose a role for ACC in parallel or independently of ethylene signaling. In this study, pharmacological experiments with ethylene biosynthesis and signaling inhibitors, 2-aminoisobutyric acid and 1-methylcyclopropene, as well as mutant analyses demonstrate ACC-specific but ethylene-independent growth responses in both dark- and light-grown seedlings. Detection of ethylene emanation in ethylene-deficient seedlings by means of laser-based photoacoustic spectroscopy further supports a signaling role for ACC. In view of these results, future studies employing ACC as a proxy for ethylene should consider ethylene-independent effects as well. The use of multiple knockout lines of ethylene biosynthesis genes will aid in the elucidation of the physiological roles of ACC as a signaling molecule in addition to its function as an ethylene precursor.

Ether-based electrolytes are widely acknowledged for their potential to form stable solid electrolyte interfaces (SEIs) for stable anode performance. However, conventional ether-based electrolytes have shown a tendency for cation-solvent co-intercalation phenomena on graphite electrodes, resulting in lower capacity and higher voltage platforms compared to those of neat cation insertion in ester-based electrolytes. In response, we propose the development of weakly solvating ether solvents to weaken the interaction between cations and solvents, thereby suppressing co-intercalation behavior.

Auxin Gradients Determine Reproductive Development in Pea (Pisum sativum).

Physiol Plant

September 2025

Plant BioSystems, Department of Agricultural, Food, and Nutritional Science, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Auxins are involved in the regulation of fruit set and development; however, the role of IAA is unclear in pea (Pisum sativum) since the endogenous auxin 4-Cl-IAA appears to be the auxin stimulating ovary (pericarp) growth. To further understand the role of auxins during fruit development, auxin localization, quantitation, transport, and gene expression activity were assessed in this model legume species. IAA levels and auxin activity (DR5::β-Glucuronidase [GUS] staining and enzyme activity) were substantially reduced in the pericarp vascular tissues, pedicels, and peduncles of fruit upon seed removal, reflecting auxin transport streams derived from the seeds through these tissues.

Polysorbate 20 (PS20) is one of the most commonly used non-ionic surfactants in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food products. Considered as biocompatible and non-irritating, it is further valued for its solubilising and protein stabilising properties. PS20 is manufactured through a multi-stage reaction of sorbitol with various fatty acids and ethylene oxide, resulting in a complex mixture of components with different molecular weights and polarity.

Rational design of Pt-integrated SnNbO/BiMoO monolayer S-scheme heterojunction for efficient ethylene removal toward fresh produce preservation.

Effective removal of ethylene (CH) during fruit and vegetables storage and transport remains a critical challenge for post-harvest preservation. Although S-scheme heterojunctions can improve charge separation and redox capacity for ethylene degradation, their efficiency is still restricted by limited carrier transfer and sluggish oxygen activation. Here, we rationally designed a novel 2D/2D SnNbO/BiMoO monolayer S-scheme heterojunction integrated with Pt co-catalyst to address these limitations.
