Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are common pollutants of water ecosystems originating from incineration processes and contamination with mineral oil. Water solubility of PAHs is generally low; for toxicity tests with aquatic organisms, they are therefore usually dissolved in organic solvents. Here we examined the effects of a typical model PAH, phenanthrene, and a solvent, acetone, on amphipods as relevant aquatic invertebrate models. Two of these species, Eulimnogammarus verrucosus and Eulimnogammarus cyaneus, are common endemics of the oligotrophic and pristine Lake Baikal, while one, Gammarus lacustris, is widespread throughout the Holarctic and inhabits smaller and more eutrophic water bodies in the Baikal area. Neither solvent nor phenanthrene caused mortality at the applied concentrations, but both substances affected gene expression in all species. Differential gene expression was more profound in the species from Lake Baikal than in the Holarctic species. Moreover, in one of the Baikal species, E. cyaneus, we found that many known components of the cellular xenobiotic detoxification system reacted to the treatments. Finally, we detected a negative relationship between changes in transcript abundances in response to the solvent and phenanthrene. This mixture effect, weaker than the impact by a single mixture component, needs further exploration.

In this paper, a series of phenanthroimidazole derivatives 2-(1 H-indol-3-yl)-3a,11b-dihydro-1 H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole(NZ1), 1-hexyl-2-(1 H-indol-3-yl)-3a,11b-dihydro-1 H-phnanthro[9,10-d] imidazole (NZ2) and 1-hexyl-2-(1-hexyl-1 H-indol-3-yl)-1 H-phenanthro[9,10-d] imidazole (NZ3) were synthesized for selective sensing of nitroaromatic compounds used in explosives. The structure was confirmed through nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, infrared and single crystal x-ray diffraction data. To ensure the molecules suitability for sensing application, several photophysical characterization were performed.

The advancement of computational molecular modeling has significantly enhanced the development of synthetic glucose receptors, addressing one of the most challenging problems in glucose recognition. This study explores the design and analysis of both three-pillared and four-pillared synthetic glucose receptors. Using polar (1,2-Bis(3-methylureido)benzene) pillars combined with benzene, biphenyl, and phenanthrene fragments as apolar surfaces, we have designed novel receptors.

The spontaneous spreading (SS) process offers a unique solution-processed platform for fabricating organic photovoltaics (OPVs) under open-air conditions. Yet its development is hindered by limited strategies to achieve uniform film thickness and homogeneous phase morphology. In this work, an SS process is developed using the green solvent o-xylene and mediated by solid additives to regulate interfacial tension, enabling the formation of uniform SS-films on the water surface.

The development of innovative functional materials derived from renewable biomass resources has attracted considerable interest. This strategy not only reduces dependence on petrochemical raw materials during production, thereby lowering carbon emissions and alleviating environmental pollution, but also increases the value-added potential, contributing to the advancement of associated agricultural and forestry industries. In this work, a rosin-based ionic liquid modified silica (Sil-VDA) was synthesized through a thiol-ene click reaction and subsequently applied to mixed-mode liquid chromatography.

A novel eutectogel of gelling natural deep eutectic solvents was developed based on the bassorin (Ba) fraction of tragacanth gum (a biological macromolecule) for transdermal delivery of dextromethorphan (DXM) in rheumatoid arthritis. The optimal eutectic combination of 1:2 malic acid and choline chloride (ChCl) was incorporated with Ba and water. The concentration of Ba used for preparing eutectogels was 2 w/w%.
