Article Abstract

This study evaluates the effect of dietary supplementation of immunostimulants on the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) with a single administration of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS), or its combination with either β-glucan or with inulin for 8 weeks. Four diets included an untreated control diet (C), MOS alone (3 g kg, M), MOS with β-glucan (3 g kg MOS + 1.5 g kg β-glucan, MB), and MOS with inulin (3 g kg MOS + 10 g kg inulin, MI). The weight gain and specific growth rate of the crabs fed M, MB, and MI diets were improved by lowing feed conversion ratio. The growth and feed utilization of the crabs fed the MB diet were improved compared with the other three groups. The crabs fed the M, MB and MI diets showed a higher intestinal trypsin activity than that in the M and control groups. The highest trypsin activity in the hepatopancreas was observed in the MB group. Crabs fed M, MB and MI diets increased antioxidant system-related enzyme activities, but reduced malondialdehyde. The highest activities of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, lysozyme and phenol oxidase in the gut and the respiratory burst of the crabs were found in the MB group. The MB diet promoted the mRNA expression of E. sinensis immune genes (ES-PT, ES-Relish, ES-LITAF, p38MAPK and Crustin) compared with the control. After 3 days of infection with Aeromonas hydrophila, the highest survival of crabs was also found in the MB group. This study indicates that the combination of MOS with β-glucan or with inulin can improve growth, antioxidant capacity, non-specific immunity and disease resistance in E. sinensis.

Transport of cholesterol to ovary via the Srb selective uptake pathway supports Star-mediated steroidogenesis in swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus).

Cholesterol, essential for steroidogenesis, is crucial in ovarian development. In crustaceans, scavenger receptor class B member (Srb) and steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (Star) may be key proteins in cholesterol transport and steroidogenesis, respectively. This study aimed to explore cholesterol's role in steroidogenesis and ovarian development in female swimming crabs through in vivo and in vitro experiments.

Feeding state-specific hormonal tuning of neural circuit modulation.

Studies of hormone influences on neural circuits and behavior have primarily focused on the manipulation of individual hormones. Here, we examine the influence of behavioral (feeding) state-specific hormonal environments on the gastric mill (chewing) circuit configured by the neuropeptide Gly-SIFamide (G-SIFamide) in the isolated stomatogastric ganglion (STG). The G-SIFamide-activated gastric mill rhythm, which is similar to that driven by the G-SIFamidergic projection neuron modulatory commissural neuron 5 (MCN5), is distinguished from other gastric mill rhythms by the presence of rhythmic, prolonged inferior cardiac (IC) neuron bursts and associated interruptions of the pyloric rhythm.

This study aimed to evaluate the mechanisms involved in skeletal muscle lipotoxicity, impaired lipid metabolism, and oxidative stress induced by a sucrose-rich diet (SRD) that mimics human Metabolic Syndrome (MS), and to assess the preventive effects and molecular mechanisms of astaxanthin (AXT) extracted from freshwater crabs () on these alterations. Male Wistar rats received a reference diet (RD), RD + AXT, SRD, or SRD + AXT (10 mg kg day orally) for 90 days. Serum glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol were measured.

The incidence of overweight and obesity continues to grow at alarming rates around the world. The search for foods with potential benefits in the prevention/treatment of overweight/obesity and related disorders has great relevance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of astaxanthin (ASTX) from freshwater crustaceans (crabs) upon visceral adiposity, adipose tissue lipid metabolism disorders and dyslipidemia present in a Metabolic Syndrome rodent model.
