Two novel donor-σ-π-σ-acceptor-type dispiro molecules-10-phenyl-10H-dispiro-acridine-9,9'-anthracene-10',9''-fluorene-2'',7''-dicarbo-nitrile (DiSAAF) and dispiro-fluorene-9,9'-anthracene-10',9''-quinolino[3,2,1-kl]phenoxazine-2,7-dicarbonitrile (DiSFAQ)-with excellent thermal stability are designed and synthesized. Both materials exhibit blocked long-range intramolecular charge transfer but show intermolecular charge-transfer emission in the film state. Their photophysical and thermal properties then are fully investigated and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 21.7% of the red phosphorescent device is achieved by DiSAAF.

Steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are widely used for treating a spectrum of inflammatory conditions; however, their systemic adverse effects hinder their usage. The DABCO-promoted annulation reaction of alkyl isocyanides with two 3-methyleneoxindole molecules in refluxing acetonitrile afforded functionalized dispiro[indoline-3,1'-cyclopentane-3',3''-indolines] in moderate yields and with a variety of diastereoselectivities through a cascade [2 + 2 + 1] cycloaddition reaction. However, the DABCO-promoted annulation reaction of 3-(2-isocyanoethyl)indole and 3-phenacylideneoxindoles gave unique polycyclic spiro[indoline-3,5'-pyrrolo[3',2':2,3]cyclopenta[1,2-]indoles] in satisfactory yields and with high diastereoselectivity.
