Article Abstract

Stigma and discrimination are among the greatest challenges that people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) face, and both are known to negatively affect quality of life as well as treatment outcomes. We analyzed the growing research and current understanding of HIV-related stigma and contextual factors in HIV/AIDS (human Immunodeficiency virus/ acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) bibliography. A total of 5984 publications published from 1991 to 2017 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. The number of papers and their impacts have been considerably grown in recent years. Research landscapes related to stigma and discrimination include clinical, physical and mental health outcomes, risk behaviors of most-at-risk populations, and HIV-related services. We found a lack of empirical studies not only on social, cultural and economic contexts, but also on specific interventions for particular settings and sub-populations. This study highlights certain gaps and provides a basis for future studies and interventions on this critical issue given the changing drivers of HIV epidemics.

Aging Amidst Anti-Trans Legislation: Strategies for Safeguarding the Mental Health of Transgender Older Adults.

Am J Public Health

October 2025

Nik M. Lampe is with the Department of Behavioral Health Science & Practice, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. J. E. Sumerau is with the Department of Sociology at the University of Tampa, Tampa, Florida.

This study investigates how transgender older adults manage and protect their mental health amid anti-trans stigma, discrimination, and legislation in the United States. Using semi-structured, individual interviews with 47 transgender older adults, two key strategies emerged: (1) defining transgender identities, bodies, and experiences as life-affirming; and (2) cultivating transgender-inclusive social support networks. Results from the study expand public health research by pinpointing the mental health management strategies that transgender older adults use to mitigate the negative impacts of anti-trans sociopolitical climates.

Treatment preferences and self-stigma in depression: Development and validation of the brief ATDT-SF.

September 2025

Department of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Centre Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark; Neurobiology Research Unit, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark; Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Background: Patients' beliefs about depression and different antidepressant treatment options may influence help-seeking behaviour, treatment adherence, and ultimately clinical outcomes. The Attitudes Toward Depression and its Treatment (ATDT) questionnaire was developed to assess these attitudes and beliefs; however, subsequent research revealed limitations in its psychometric properties. We sought to develop and validate a shortened version (ATDT-SF) with improved reliability.

Background: There is evidence that cerebral palsy (CP) could be linked to stigma and discrimination, however current evidence is limited to small qualitative studies. The goal of this co-designed survey was to elicit information on experiences of stigma and discrimination amongst a larger sample of adults in the UK and Ireland.

Methods: Quantitative questions about sources of stigma and qualitative questions designed to elicit information on experiences of stigma were shared via an online survey.
