Article Abstract

Spore morphology of Thelypteridaceae species growing in Malakand Division, Northern Pakistan, was studied using both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The taxa are Christella dentata and Glaphyropteridopsis erubescens in the subfamily Thelypteridoideae, and Phegopteris connectilis, Pseudophegopteris pyrrhorhachis, and Pseudophegopteris levingei in the subfamily Phegopteridoideae. The studied species exhibit differences in spore size, exospore thickness, color, and ornamentation. Spores of the studied species are monolete and medium-sized, and shape is ellipsoidal in both polar and equatorial views. The average measurement of the polar diameter ranges from 27 μm to 31 μm, whereas in the equatorial direction it varied from 20 μm to 40 μm. The exospore thickness ranges from 1.2 μm to 2.4 μm. Reticulate, laevigate with microgranules, cristate, and coarsely echinate surface ornamentation are observed among the species. Multivariate analysis including unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean and principal component analysis was used for the grouping and discrimination of species and genera.

Compared to sun-exposed melanomas, acral melanomas are genetically diverse and occur in areas with low sun exposure and high mechanical loads. During metastatic growth, melanomas invade from the epidermis to the dermis layers through dense tumor stroma and are exposed to fibrillar collagen architectures and mechanical stresses. However, the role of these signals during acral melanoma pathogenesis is not well understood.

Drenched Pages: A Primer on Wet Books.

Biology (Basel)

Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, NJ 08901, USA.

Molds readily grow on wet books, documents, and other library materials where they ruin them chemically, mechanically, and aesthetically. Poor maintenance of libraries, failures of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, roof leaks, and storm damage leading to flooding can all result in accelerated fungal growth. Moreover, when fungal spores are present at high concentrations in the air, they can be linked to severe respiratory conditions and possibly to other adverse health effects in humans.

Inappropriate storage conditions make Codonopsis pilosula more susceptible to infection by harmful fungi because of moisture, which reduces the plant's therapeutic effectiveness. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of plant endophytes have shown great promise in recent years for managing postharvest plant diseases. This study investigates the inhibitory effects of VOCs released by Bacillus thuringiensis G-5 on two postharvest pathogenic fungi of C.

The mother sporocyst is the least understood digenean life cycle stage. This study provides the first detailed description of the neuromusculature and reproductive apparatus of mother sporocysts in the hemiuroid digenean , a monoxenous parasite of White Sea mud snails, using transmission electron microscopy and fluorescent staining for muscles, FMRFamide-related peptides (FaRP), and serotonin (5HT). These parthenitae lack a germinal mass and have only a few germinal elements, which explains their limited reproductive potential.

Machine learning driven semi-automated framework for yeast sporulation efficiency quantification using ilastik segmentation and Fiji nuclear enumeration.

Accurate quantification of yeast sporulation efficiency is essential for genetic studies, but manual counting remains time-consuming and susceptible to subjective bias. Although deep learning tools like cellpose provide automated solutions, there exists a compelling need for alternative approaches that enable the quantification of spores. Our methodology employs ilastik's texture-feature optimization to reliably segment sporulating mother cells, intentionally avoiding explicit tetrad discrimination to ensure robustness across diverse spore morphologies.
