Article Abstract

Purpose: The physiological consequences of freely chosen cadence during cycling remains poorly understood. We sought to determine the effect of cadence on the respiratory and hemodynamic response to cycling exercise.

Methods: Eleven cyclists (10 males, 1 female; age, 27 ± 6 yr; V˙O2max = 60.8 ± 3.7 mL·kg·min) completed four, 6-min constant-load cycling trials at 10% below their previously determined gas exchange threshold (i.e., 63% ± 5% peak power) while pedaling at 60, 90, and 120 rpm, and a freely chosen cadence (94.3 ± 6.9 rpm) in randomized order. Standard cardiorespiratory parameters were measured and an esophageal electrode balloon catheter was used to assess electromyography of the diaphragm (EMGdi) and the work of breathing (Wb). Leg blood flow index (BFI) was determined on four muscles using near-infrared spectroscopy with indocyanine green dye injections.

Results: Oxygen uptake (V˙O2) increased as a function of increasing cadence (all pairwise comparisons, P < 0.05). The EMGdi and Wb were significantly greater at 120 rpm compared with all other conditions (all P < 0.01). Vastus medialis and semitendinosus BFI were significantly greater at 120 rpm compared with 60 and 90 rpm (all P < 0.05). Gastrocnemius BFI was higher at 120 rpm compared with all other cadences (all P < 0.01). No difference in BFI was found in the vastus lateralis (P = 0.06). Blood flow index was significantly correlated with the increase in V˙O2 with increasing cadence in the medial gastrocnemius (P < 0.001) and approached significance in the vastus lateralis (P = 0.09), vastus medialis (P = 0.06), and semitendinosus (P = 0.09). There was no effect of cadence on Borg 0-10 breathing or leg discomfort ratings (P > 0.05).

Conclusions: High cadence cycling at submaximal exercise intensities is metabolically inefficient and increases EMGdi, Wb, and leg muscle blood flow relative to slower cadences.

Background: Every year in France, 40% of people aged ≥80 years are hospitalized, with an average length of hospital stay of 25 days and a readmission rate of 14% to 30% within the month following discharge. This situation is putting pressure on the health care system, encouraging the reinforcement of home care to reduce avoidable hospitalization. The EPOCA remote patient monitoring (RPM) system is a medical and social telehealth solution specialized in RPM, teleconsultation, tele-expertise, and care coordination in emergency medicine and geriatrics.

Acetoin (3-hydroxy-2-butanone) is a key flavor compound that enhances the sensory profile of fruit vinegar. In this study, we developed a high-yield acetoin fermentation process using a synthetic microbial combination composed of NF2 and NF171 for citrus vinegar production. By screening compatible strains and optimizing fermentation parameters, the co-culture system significantly improved acetoin synthesis compared to single-strain fermentations.

This article presents a comprehensive dataset acquired from two fault diagnosis environments: (1) industrial AC motors operating under various real-world conditions, and (2) belt-loosening scenarios in HVAC air handling units. The dataset was collected to support the development and validation of data-driven fault detection methods across diverse mechanical and electrical systems. For the AC motor dataset, faults were deliberately introduced to simulate common degradation modes, including coil winding faults, inter-phase short circuits, misalignment, and bearing-related issues such as rolling-element and journal bearing faults.

Background: Microbial carotenoids have gained industry interest due to their safety and diverse biological activities; however, the low yield of carotenoids hinders their applications. Hence, this study focused on optimizing carotenoid pigment production from Micrococcus luteus strains by studying 54 physical and chemical independent conditions. The chronic infections by Enterococcus faecalis are related to its ability to form biofilms on the surface of several implanted medical devices, such as urinary catheters.

Rapamycin (RPM) extends longevity in various species and combats vascular senescence related diseases. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) have attracted attention as a potential therapy for cardiovascular diseases due to their excellent antioxidant and drug-carrying capacity. However, RPM coated SeNPs (RPM-SeNPs) have not been reported and their potential for preventing endothelial oxidative senescence remains unclear.
