A model cancer cell line was used to initiate polymerisation of pyrrole to form the conducting material polypyrrole. The polymerisation was shown to occur through the action of cytosolic exudates rather than that of the membrane redox sites that normally control the oxidation state of iron as ferricyanide or ferrocyanide. The data demonstrate for the first time that mammalian cells can be used to initiate synthesis of conducting polymers and suggest a possible route to detection of cell damage and/or transcellular processes through in situ and amplifiable signal generation.

Polysaccharide-based hydrogels often lack mechanical strength and, when used for protein delivery, are generally limited to diffusion-based release. In this work, we developed robust polysaccharide- and polyester-based near-infrared (NIR)-responsive hydrogels. Hydrogels are made from photo-crosslinked methacrylated dextran (DEX-MA), methacrylated polylactide containing oxygen reactive species (ROS) sensitive thioketal groups (PLA-TK-MA), and covalently bound protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) that generates ROS under NIR irradiation.

Hemoperfusion is one of the most effective blood purification techniques to quickly remove bilirubin from the blood of patients with kidney or liver failure. Although numerous adsorbent materials with high adsorption capacity have been developed, their clinical application are still limited due to poor biocompatibility and biosafety issues. Herein, biocompatible core-shell structured adsorbents with cellulose microspheres (CMs) as the supporting core and phase-transformed lysozyme (PTL) as the functional shell are fabricated for the removal of bilirubin in hemoperfusion.

Background: Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a naturally occurring carcinogenic mycotoxin that poses critical risks to human health due to its presence in our daily consumed foods and beverages. Electrochemical aptasensor-based assays have been developed as an alternative to classical methods such as HPLC. However, they need many steps for their construction and labeling, which leads to constrained signal output and reduced large-scale production.

Background: In plant micropropagation, the adaptation phase represents one of the most critical limiting steps due to the high mortality rates commonly observed under ex-vitro conditions. The Fercal grapevine rootstock, characterized by its high adaptability to calcareous soils, holds significant potential for large-scale propagation. Therefore, evaluating strategies to improve survival during the transition from in vitro to ex-vitro environments is essential.

This study aimed to investigate the association between serum high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) concentrations, platelet counts, and the severity of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NHB), as well as their correlation with the total bilirubin/albumin (B/A) ratio. A total of 82 neonates diagnosed with NHB and treated at JingMen People's Hospital of Hubei Province, China, between September 2023 and December 2023 were enrolled. Participants were categorized into mild and severe NHB groups based on total bilirubin levels.
